Clothes made the man. Phoenix had heard that statement many times before, and he knew the truth behind it. Clothes did make the man.
A suit of a colour no normal man would wear belied a self-confidence everyone but those closest to him believed in. Acolytes’ robes to keep secret her bloodline, to keep herself safe from jealous, vengeful family members who did not know her face. A whip to show a strong demeanour, covering the breaks in personality no self-respecting von Karma would allow. A set of Hazakura robes to hide oneself behind a façade so weak everyone fell for. A bright-coloured suit to appear confident in oneself, to give hope to the hopeless clients.
And now, a frayed sweatshirt from his college days, the one he wore when he couldn’t look anyone in the eye after his trial. A blue hat, the only remnant of the advice to wear blue whenever possible, saying she is my life, not the past. A casual look to make the appearance of a man who knew he had fallen and would not get back up.
Phoenix would have grinned as everyone, even Kristoph, disregarded his actions, but that would have broken the image he created. Who would think this shadow of his former self, a man so clearly broken and embittered by his loss, would try to find the truth now, since it would prove nothing in the end?
What they didn’t know was that he still had his old suit, hidden from prying eyes, his confidence hidden behind a frayed grey sweatshirt. He wasn’t a broken man just yet, no matter what everyone said.
