A conversation on a hilltop

I'm taking a course in Music History right now. We've been talking about the string quartet -- how it was invented, what the music was like, what the players were like. Apparently, it wasn't so much professionals performing at concerts, but a group of friends, amateur musicians, who got together to enjoy playing with each other. String quartets were written like a conversation, as if the instruments were engaging in dialogue together. A gathering of friends -- I think that's the best kind of music.

What do you think they're talking about?
