[this post will be crossposted to tumblr, I have no idea if I've formatted properly, LJ is strange]
I apped the following seven characters for Story Wars
three people with very similar names, by weird coincidence:
- Mel, from Sunshine by Robin McKinley
- Maladict, from Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
- Malcolm Reynolds, from Firefly
two noblemen with family problems:
- Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation from Avatar: the Last Airbender
- Faramir of Gondor from Lord of the Rings
two potential people of mass destruction:
- Numair Salmalin from the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce
- Sollux Captor from Homestuck
I put the following in the "other stuff you'd like to tell us" section:
You may have noticed a set of narrative themes these characters have in common. These are some themes that interest me and that I'd like to explore.
- horrible empires doing horrible things to people, or trying to (Numair, Zuko, Sollux)
- struggling with belonging and identity (Faramir, Numair, Maladict, Zuko, Sollux)
- transformation and modification of the self (Mel, Numair, Maladict, Zuko, Sollux)
- use of language, technology, and information (Mel, Faramir, Numair, Maladict, Sollux)
- deep and abiding fondness for people who aren't terrible (Mel, Faramir, Mal, Numair, Maladict, Zuko, Sollux)
- conviction that most people are terrible (Mal, Numair, Maladict, Zuko, Sollux)
- conviction that most authorities are especially terrible (Mel, Mal, Numair)
- becoming an authority oneself because the alternatives are worse (Faramir, Mal, Numair, Maladict, Zuko, Sollux)
