Kairi cradled Sora gently, his head resting on her lap, while Riku hovered protectively over the two of them. Their part was done.
In the ruined hall of the Neutral Grounds, Aqua watched Ventus' body carefully, still propped in the centre chair where she had placed him over ten years ago. She bit her lip as nothing happened, then exchanged a nervous glance with Terra. The man just crossed his arms across his chest and lowered his gaze to his feet.
Had they waited too long? Aqua clenched her fists nervously at her sides and stared at the boy she considered to be her little brother; the boy she had promised to wake up.
The boy she had left waiting while she wandered the Dark Realm, searching for a way back to the Light.
Sora stirred, his eyes opening slowly before levering himself up onto his elbows. Kairi continued sitting behind him, in case his strength gave out, but Riku relaxed. Knowing that the removal of Ventus' Heart hadn't permanently harmed Sora was a relief.
"What's wrong?" the brunet asked, staring at his doppelganger. "Why hasn't he woken up? Didn't it work?"
Like Sora, Aqua couldn't look away from the blond.
"His Heart has returned, he just..." She closed her eyes briefly, searching her mind for any reason why Ven continued to slumber. "He just mustn't realize it's safe, yet," she concluded, opening her eyes again.
His energy returning quickly, Sora sat up fully, then accepted Riku's hand to pull him back to his feet. He dusted off his shorts briefly, brow furrowed in thought.
"How do we let him know he's safe?" he wondered aloud, exchanging glances with Riku and Kairi, who had clambered to her own feet once Sora was standing.
Terra kicked a random chunk of stone in frustration, gripping his hair in his hands, obviously blaming himself for Ven's plight.
Riku and Kairi were concerned, but only Sora joined the other two in worry; the other two from the Destiny Islands weren't really connected to Ventus like the other three were.
Beginning to pace, Aqua finally let her eyes focus on something besides Ven, and let her mind wander.
It was a good question, how did they let Ven know he was safe? It's not like there was a precendent...
The blue-haired woman's gasp caught everyone's attention, but for a few moments she merely stood there, frozen.
There was!
Aurora.
A smile bloomed across her face, and she marched straight over to the sleeping boy, before kneeling in front of him. She ignored everyone else, just thinking of Ven, and how much she loved him and missed him. She gently brushed his bangs back from his forehead.
"Time to get up, sleepy-head," she murmured good-naturedly.
Then she leaned foreward and kissed him.
She let her lips linger on his for several seconds, leaning back slightly only when he began to stir.
His eyes fluttered open, and were delightfully aware, if still sleep-muddled.
Then he noticed how close she was and tried to jump back, a blush blooming across his cheeks and a stutter in his voice.
"A-aqua?! What... what's going on?" He looked around in obvious confusion.
Aqua laughed; she laughed fully and joyfully, engulfing the smaller boy in a hug, planting another kiss into his hair, letting tears of relief fall down her face. She could hear Sora, Riku, and Kairi cheering in the background, and felt Terra squish in on Ven's other side to make it a group hug.
Starlight shone in on them through the broken stained-glass window, and finally their family was whole again.
