"Stop pouting already, Dick," Roy called out from his place by the campfire. "It's not like I told some big secret."
Dick glared as he plopped down by the fire since Lian was giving him the sad puppy dog eyes for sitting by the Range Rover, away from her, her dad, and Grant. "Didn't you?" Dick tried very hard not to make that sound snappish, but it hadn't worked.
"Sorry," Grant muttered, poking the fire with a stick.
Roy rolled his eyes, putting a hand on Grant's shoulder. "No reason to be sorry that Dick likes to live up to his name," he stated, fixing a glare on Dick before turning to Lian. "I think someone's looking tired. Let's roll out your sleeping bag, etai yazi."
Lian pouted, but when she saw her daddy giving her a special signal, she yawned on cue. "Okay, daddy," she said as she got up and took daddy's hand.
Dick glanced at Roy suspiciously who mouthed 'talk with Grant.' Sighing when Roy and Lian were out of earshot, Dick turned back to look at Grant. Still poking the fire, Grant wasn't really paying attention, or maybe he was just trying very hard not to be there. Something they have in common, then.
"Hey," Dick started which made Grant suddenly look up, a little panicked. "Whoa, I was just trying to make conversation...?"
"Why?" Grant asked bluntly. "I thought you were pretending not to be here."
Dick winced. "Okay, maybe I was, but look, I was an ass. You knowing my identity isn't as big a deal as I'm making it out to be," he admitted.
"You're only saying that because Roy probably put you up to it," Grant replied, poking the fire again.
"That's not true..." Dick started, cringing inwardly. "Maybe it was, but now I'm kind of worried at how well you're ducking out on talking to me."
"I'm not," he muttered, looking into the fire.
Dick ran a hand through his hair, looking over his shoulder to see if Lian was asleep. Of course she wasn't, and Roy wouldn't come back over until she was, which made Dick think Lian had a hand in this. Fix two teammates at once with his daughter's help was something Roy would attempt. It helped that they were in Roy's element and not the Tower.
"You are," Dick told him as he moved, so that he was sitting next to Grant instead of across from him and as far away as possible. "I would know."
Grant looked up at Dick, frowning. "What would you know?" he bit out harshly.
"I know family can make you cut yourself off sometimes," Dick stated. "It's looks easier to push it all away and not deal with it. Trust me, it just gets worse."
Grant's face crumpled at that. "Your family cuts themselves off too, so it's not some big difference," he muttered, angrily throwing his stick in the fire. "It's not like they're pretending to care as just as an excuse to hurt you."
Dick's eyes widened. "Grant, what-"
"Or saying they're s-sorry as an excuse to t-touch-"
"Grant! You gotta calm down!" Dick exclaimed, trying to sooth him, still a little shocked by Grant's admission.
"I'm...going critical..." Grant told him, glowing with unbridled power.
Dick was torn, looking back to the Range Rover where Roy and Lian and watching them with shocked looks; they had heard what Grant had said. "You can do that here," Dick told him. "The desert is spacious enough for that..."
Grant collapsed to the ground, sobs wracking his body as the glow faded away. Dick quickly moved over to him, carefully putting an arm around his shoulder, listening as Grant told him his story through the sobs. Rubbing Grant's back, Dick tried to sooth him the best he could.
