It's an all Goth Music week...
A few weeks ago woodwindy mentioned that she had picked up a number of Goth music CDs. I think she was somewhat surprised when I showed interest in the current state of Goth music, but graciously let me borrow them when I inquired a second time about it and restated that I was, unlike most of our conversations, genuinely interested and not just poking fun at her.
And my review of the Goth music sample is...
... not quite hard enough for me. It would certainly be understandable if woodwindy's CDs were skewed to her own musical preference (lots of great vocals, mostly pre-1900's sounding instrumentation) but there wasn't quite the anger or mix with the grinding of industrial that I remember from the early 90s. I kept wanting to mix some of the vocal tracks over top of something like Audioslave to create something... bizarre I guess.
"In Longing" by The Dreamside was a good example. I may have to try getting one of their CDs.
Carfax Abbey and Ego Likeness were also both consistently pretty good.
I also really liked "When You're Evil" by Voltaire (from Projekt: Gothic an ethereal/darkwave compilation), but more in a "They Might Be Giants-the lyrics are amusing and the music is good". I may have to look into getting something by him as well.
I made a few notes on the 3 DJ Ferret collections that I was lent:
General Scale:
5 - Wow. Thinking about getting this.
4 - Good. Enjoyed the song. Certainly wouldn't mind having it.
3 - Average. I didn't find anything particularly good or bad about
it. Disposable would be another description.
2 - Not my Style. I'm sure someone likes this. It's just not me.
1 - Ugh. Wow, that's just bad.
Dancing in the Dark 2006
Interesting introduction to the current state of the genre.
I think I was hoping for more industrial-goth than was on this
album, but I found some songs that I really enjoyed.

Dancing in the Dark 2: 10 Years of Dancing Ferret
Well, this one just wasn't as good as I'd hoped. It was a lot more
"clubby" than the last 2, but instead of music that demands you
dance, it's more music that you play when you want to make it seem
like you could, but actually people are going to be talking all the
time and you don't want to step on their conversations.
Most of it is just kinda there. I liked the Carfax Abbey song, and
the Corvus Covax song is a lot of things I don't like that come
together to make a cool song. Odd that one.
