Tough

So I get an awkward message from a cousin in the Philippines through Facebook today, asking for some money as apparently the flooding that happened last season has meant the harvest in the fish farms was affected. I haven't responded yet but my initial reaction is, "umm, no". If I let her borrow money, I bettter expect not to see it again. Also, if ( Read more... )

Reading into that situation, the only thing that I can do is agree with your sentiment regarding that side of the family. That is, to say, "tough tits."

I reckon you'd definitely be right to not donate to said cousin, especially if they're not looking after their own money and properly using it in the first place!

(I think that my point of view is kind of influenced by my cousin - funnily enough, on my dad's side** - who, after nan's funeral, stayed at our place for a few months, apparently on a 'working holiday', but didn't do much except for bum at our place and leech our internet; the only way we could get him to go out is me pretending that our net connection wasn't working by purposefully loosening the cable connection enough for the net to 'conk out'.

**actually, it only seems to be from that particular super-strict elder brother of dad's where the cousins didn't seem to be entirely 'in tune' with the rest of us; my other cousins, on the other hand, are fantastic by comparison).

Always good to be cautious when loaning money to [extended] relatives. I think a lot of the time, there's that awkward mindset of "Oh I won't have to repay them cos WE R FAMILY \o/" because... no. And going by what you said about them being... not very money-wise, just gives you more reason to be careful. You worked hard for that money.

I think I was circling around that conclusion but I couldn't hit on it last night, but yes, you're correct, it is money I worked hard for. Not saying that they don't work hard themselves, however I just feel that past experience reminds that it might be more the opposite. I mean, shit, the last time I saw her with one of her kids (I think it was her kid, but anyway, it's from that side of the family), they were letting him sip beer and laughing about it... ack, this bothers me quite a bit, but yeah, made up my mind...
