Disclaimer: I do not own anything in this story except for Annie, her family, and her friends. All music used is owned by their respective owners, writers, and singers. I also, unfortunately, do not own Michael. If i did, he would still be around, playing with his children and making all of his fans happy.
Summary: Late 1979, Michael, after the release of Off the Wall, is longing for a friend. He walks alone at dusk in hopes to find one. He discovers one in the form of a little girl named Annie. This would lead to a long lasting friendship that spans three decades, featuring highs and lows, including: an obsessed older sister, an overprotective father, "Billie Jean", haters, alligations, death, and the pitfalls of being friends with the (currently not as of the time this starts) King of Pop.

Mid April, 1987
Pool locker room
Annie’s high school
“So they actually kicked Tatiana off the tour because she slipped Michael the tongue during the show in NYC?” Kelsey asked loudly, trying to wash the chlorine from the pool water out of her hair. She, Annie, and Yukina were in the school showers after finishing up their gym class where they had to do swimming drills. They were the last three to get a hold of the showers in the locker room, so they were able to talk loudly about things, including Michael Jackson’s Bad Tour.
“Pretty much, yeah.” Annie replied from the stall next to Kelsey’s, rubbing her eyes with the water from the shower before going back to cleaning her water goggles.
“Well that kinda sucks. She’s a pretty good lookin’ lady.” Kelsey remarked with a pout.
“But you said she wasn’t allowed to do that. Why did she go against the rules and kiss him?” Yukina wondered out loud from the other stall next to Kelsey’s, washing her arms.
“Yukina, haven’t you looked at Michael lately?” Kelsey asked, peaking out from behind the divider, looking at Yukina. Yukina nodded, shooting an annoyed look at her red haired companion. Kelsey leaned back into her shower stall, washing her arms. “Mmm, I wouldn’t mind slipping him some tongue, even…,” Kelsey growled playfully, then turned hesitant, “Even considering what my preferences are.” Kelsey added.
“Kelsey, that is so rude! Not only are you a high school student, he’s twelve years older than you! Plus, aren’t you supposed to be only attracted to women?” Yukina scolded, reaching for her towel.
“C’mon, Yuki, I’m bisexual, not homosexual. I may like girls a bit more than boys, but that doesn’t mean I can’t find men attractive and damn, Michael is very, very attractive.” Kelsey explained, rolling her eyes for a second before shaking her head in the midst of the shower spray to wash any remaining bits of chlorine off her face.
“Can we not talk about making out with him for a while, guys?” Annie asked, exiting her stall while wearing a towel around her body.
“Annie-Chan, matte!” Yukina exclaimed, wrapping her towel around her body and followed her. Annie sat down in front of one of the lockers and grabbed a smaller towel near her backpack and began drying her hair with it.
“Yukina, I’m not in the mood. I already get picked on by Diana at home about my feelings for Michael; I don’t need to hear it from my friends.” Annie told Yukina, undoing the towel around her body and letting it drop down to her feet.
“Annie?” Tracy, who had been sitting nearby, asked, scooting over next to Annie.
“What?” Annie asked, getting agitated. Tracy recoiled back, now a bit nervous about asking a question. Tracy was almost fully dressed, only wearing a bra, a pair of jeans, and socks. Her fiery red hair was still damp from the shower.
“I- The big Michael Jackson thing at school the theatre group is doing in a few weeks. You’re in it, right?” Tracy asked, grabbing her light blue long sleeve shirt, but not putting it on right away.
“Yeah, I am,” Annie nodded, setting both towels aside and began to remove her bathing suit. She grabbed her bra and put in on once the top of her swimsuit was pulled down. “I really wish you didn’t drop out of the club last year, Tracy. You have a great voice and great stage presence.” Annie told her friend.
“I know, but with mom sick and dad working a lot, I need to be at home to look after my little brother and sister.” Tracy nodded, looking down sadly.
“Family is always important and you chose wisely to help them right now, Tracy-Chan.” Yukina observed, already sitting down on Tracy’s other side and began to change.
“Thanks, Yukina.” Tracy smiled kindly.
“So that’s the update on that video that’s gonna play at the show? You finished filming that yet?” Kelsey asked, sitting down next to Yukina, brushing her hair out.
“As far as I know, they’re filming some extra shots, but aside from that, it’s pretty much done in the filming department. After that, it’ll be ready for post production and hopefully be ready for the show.” Annie replied, now clothed in her undergarments and putting on her socks.
“So, c’mon, what’s the song you guys used in the film? Recent release or an oldie?” Kelsey leaned forward, sliding off her two piece bathing suit.
“Not telling.” Annie smiled sweetly.
“Please???” Kelsey asked, making puppy dog eyes at her friend.
“No way, Kelsey. You just have to wait and see just like everybody else.” Annie shook her head, not revealing anything. Kelsey pouted childishly in response, annoyed that she got no info.
“What about the song you’re gonna sing?” Tracy asked, sliding on her sneakers.
“It’s one that’s close to my heart. One that’s very special to me.” Annie replied, smiling once again.
“Dirty Diana.” Kelsey guessed bluntly.
“Kel-Chan!” Yukina exclaimed in shock, dropping the skirt she was about to put on onto the floor.
“No!” Annie snorted in amusement.
“Human Nature?” Tracy asked curiously.
“No, but I would’ve loved to do that one.” Annie shook her head.
“Oh, Smooth Criminal!” Kelsey blurted out, putting on her bra as she guessed. Annie shot her an annoyed glare, but then smiled again.
“No, but Michael’s planning on something awesome for that song.” Annie remarked.
“What, Annie-Chan?” Yukina asked, finally able to slide on her skirt.
“Something big and better than Thriller.” Annie began to say as she pulled on her shirt, her words a bit muffled from behind the cloth. She then poked her head through and shook her hair out. “A movie.” She added.
“A MOVIE!?” Tracy, Yukina, and Kelsey exclaimed together, but not at the same time.
“More like a really long music video part of a collection of others shown in movie form. He’s been tossing ideas around for a while, but since the second leg of this tour, he’s been working on it in between concerts.” Annie explained further.
“How cool.” Tracy whispered in awe.
“So what does Michael-Sempai have planned for that song?” Yukina asked, adjusting her blouse.
“Something really cool, slick, and pretty damn awesome.” Annie replied, standing up as she slid her jeans on.
“C’mon, give up some basic info, will ya? You know, the setting, characters, costumes, all that stuff.” Kelsey urged,
“You’ll see when it comes out, but all I can say is that it’s gonna be really awesome.” Annie replied, slipping on her shoes.
“Can’t you just tell us any more!?” Kelsey begged.
“Sorry, but I don’t want to spoil anything else.” Annie grinned, grabbing her backpack and walked away.
“Aw, come on, Annie, don’t leave us hangin’!” Kelsey shouted. When Annie didn’t reply, Kelsey groaned, falling back against the lockers. “Damn that Annie. She could’ve at least told us more about what he’s gonna do for that song.” Kelsey pouted.
“Annie-Chan will let us know when she wants to.” Yukina calmly told her friend, running a comb through her jet black hair.
“I guess so…” Kelsey sighed, not liking that one bit.
“Come on, you guys. Class is gonna be over in two minutes.” Tracy told the two, adjusting her shirt.
“Shit! Why didn’t you tell me sooner?!” Kelsey cursed loudly, scrambling for the rest of her clothing.
“You never asked.” Tracy shrugged.

Annie’s high school
Annie sat in the attire she’d be wearing during the first half of the Michael Jackson dedication show she was performing in as she got the last bit of makeup done. She was wearing a gold sequined halter top with red accents, a matching skirt done in the same style that was cut short, but wasn’t considered a miniskirt, and ankle high gold go-go boots. It was very different from what she would usually wear, but for the first half of the show, it was perfect.
She let out a sigh as she put the final touches on her hair, which was done up in a high pigtail.
“You excited, Ann?” A girl, a sophomore working on hair and makeup, asked. “You’ve already been a big help in organizing this thing.” She went on.
“A little, I guess. I just gave some ideas about the dancing and organization of which song should go where. It’s not like I produced, directed, or wrote the whole thing, Tia.” Annie told the girl, Tia, as she removed her glasses and set them in a small case near a bag filled with her regular clothes.
“But you gave some really good impute on this. Plus, rumor has it that you and Michael Jackson are friends. Is that true?” Tia went on, asking curiously. Annie let out a groan, pulling out her contact lenses case.
“Why does everyone have to bring this up? Yes, I am friends with Michael, but I don’t flaunt it around all the time. I only mention it a few times.” Annie asked, then remarked. Tia recoiled slightly as Annie sat back down, putting on her contacts.
“It’s still pretty cool, though. You were in that Captain Eo thing at Disney and your older sisters were in Thriller. I think that’s something you oughta be proud of.” Tia noted innocently, waiting for Annie to finish putting in her contacts before working on Annie’s makeup.
“Yeah, and all that coolness nearly got me hit by a damn beer bottle.” Annie muttered in annoyance, blinking a few times to let her contacts set. Tia dropped her blush compact on her lap in shock.
“What?” Tia asked, brown eyes wide in shock.
“I forgot, you weren’t here at that time, you were in middle school when that happened. It’s a bit of a long story, but to make it short, a boy I had a crush on turned out to be a real asshole and he and his real girlfriend, a total bitch, thought it was fun to insult me, my family, and my friends. I told both of them off when they started making fun of Michael, who was with me when they decided to say some really bad things. Michael backed me up when they made fun of my friendship with him and you know what they did? Threw a beer bottle at me, nearly hitting me in the head if Michael didn’t get me out of the way.” Annie explained as Tia applied the blush on her cheeks.
“Oh my God. What happened to them?” Tia gasped, still in shock.
“Both were expelled, not just for the beer throwing, but for drinking on school grounds. Haven’t heard from the asshole, but his girlfriend attacked me, my sister Diana, and Diana’s college roommate about two years ago. Diana and I got some pretty nasty injuries from it - that’s why I was out of school for the early part of January and late December - but Diana’s friend didn’t survive the attack.” Annie went on, her eyes filling with tears as the memories of those two nights returned in full force.
“No.” Tia gasped again, this time in disbelief. Annie gave a small nod. “How horrible.” Tia whispered.
“It was, Tia, especially for all of us. I never want to deal with something like that ever again.” Alison replied, approaching the two with Maggie and a man hidden under a black jacket, a red baseball cap, and sunglasses. Annie blinked in surprise, her eyes refocusing due to the contacts she was now wearing.
“Mom, Maggie, you made it! Where’re Diana and the boys?” Annie asked, standing up as the sadness she was feeling fading away.
“Diana, Tommy, Paul, and Marty are getting our seats.” Maggie replied. She then smiled slyly. “Plus, a certain someone wanted to see you.” Maggie added, nudging the man next to her in the side. Annie looked confused, then stared at the man hesitantly.
“Is that…?” Annie started. The man lowered his sunglasses and smiled, winking playfully at her. “Mikey!” Annie exclaimed joyfully, rushing over and hugged Michael.
“No way… is that…?” Tia whispered. If it was possible to be in more shock than she was before, she was now.
“I thought you were doing a show in Sweden tonight?” Annie asked, pulling away for a moment.
“Surprise!” Michael smiled with a slight shrug of his shoulders, giggling as he responded.
“Silly Annie. You really should check the schedule better. That concert isn’t for two days. He took a small detour to see you perform.” Maggie stated with a sly grin.
“Oh, Maggie, don’t be so cruel to your sister. She hasn’t seen him in over two months.” Alison scolded Maggie. Michael then glanced over at Tia, who was staring at Michael in stunned silence.
“Oh hi, are you friends with Mouse?” Michael asked curiously.
“I... Is….” Tia squeaked out, frozen in shock.
“Yes, Tia, it really is him, but please don’t tell anyone he’s here, ok?” Annie told Tia. Tia nodded briskly, still gaping at Michael.
“Is she ok?” Maggie wondered.
“I think she’s in shock.” Alison observed. Annie let out a sigh.
“Alright, you guys, the shoe’s gonna start in a couple of minutes, you better get to your seats before they’re filled up.” Annie told the trio. She then turned to Michael and smiled kindly. “You really didn’t have to-.” Annie started.
“Annie, I love hearing you since. I am, however, a little nervous about hearing my songs performed by others. But if you’re singing, I wanna see it.” Michael told Annie, patting her left shoulder. Annie started to blush shyly.
“I’m gonna be dancing, too, especially in this first act. I’m not as good as you, of course…” Annie noted nervously.
“Ann, don’t start this up again,” Michael let out a soft groan. “You’ve got your own style and grace and that’s what makes you special. Don’t ever forget it.” Michael assured the young woman.
“Totally, but like Annie said before, we better find our seats before all the good ones are taken.” Maggie agreed, then urged Michael.
“Margaret, leave them be and let them have a moment together. They’ve hardly seen each other in these past several months.” Alison told Maggie sternly.
“It’s alright, mom, she is right. Go get to your seats.” Annie told her mother. She then gave Michael a strong hug. “I’m glad you’re here, though, Michael. I’ll talk to you and the others during the break.” Annie whispered while they embraced. Michael then broke the hug after a few seconds and he, Alison, and Maggie left.
“Oh… my…. God, was that-? Oh my God, I can’t believe it was him and I froze up like that that! Oh, I am soooooo embarrassed!” Tia exclaimed, coming out of her state of shock.
“Tia, it’s ok.” Annie assured her friend. Her expression turned dark as she then said “At least you didn’t try to hit on him like someone I know.”
“What?” Tia asked, confused. Annie shook her head.
“Never mind, lets get the rest of my makeup done up before curtain.” Annie told Tia, dragging her off.

Michael, Alison, and Maggie found their seats in the middle of the auditorium. Diana, Tommy, Paul, and Marty, with a video camera, were waiting for them expectantly. Diana immediately asked them what Annie was going to perform and was sourly disappointed when Michael and Maggie told her she didn’t give a reply. Michael, meanwhile, was still a bit nervous about the upcoming performances, but Alison assured him that it’s all for fun and Annie wouldn’t be involved in something that would insult Michael in anyway.
Pretty soon, the show was underway. The performances were announced onstage by a music teacher, who was acting at the M.C. for the show. The first one was a group performance that performed “Can You Feel It”, setting the mood for the first act. Pretty much all the songs that followed afterward for the first half were all Jackson 5, Jacksons, and Michael’s solo career up to Off The Wall. About half of the performances were done by bands, a few doing their own skew on some of the more classic songs from Michael’s childhood. Diana and Maggie noted to the others that there were some teachers and Middle School students performing as well, mixed in with the High School students.
Annie, as she promised, also performed in some of the more heavily danced-based performances. She was in the first song, plus “Get on the Floor” and “Shake Your Body”, which was the last song of the first act. The young woman really showed off many of her dancing moves, especially during an extended instrumental break the band performing “Shake Your Body” added, reminding Michael of when he performs the song live.
A twenty minute break was called once “Shake Your Body” ended and Michael, Diana, Tommy, and Paul rushed backstage to meet up with Annie. Annie, who was drinking some water from a bottle, was in the hallway, catching her breath when she spotted them approach.
“Yo, Dancin’ Queen!” Diana waved at her sister, making her way towards her.
“Hey, you guys enjoying the show so far?” Annie smiled, waving them over.
“It’s been fun. Some of those singers weren’t all that bad, but a lot were quite good, some REALLY good.” Diana shrugged.
“When are you gonna sing, Annie?” Tommy asked innocently.
“Next act.” Annie replied, smiling as she ruffled up Tommy’s hair playfully.
“What song you doing?” Diana asked.
“Not saying.” Annie shook her head, still smiling.
“Please???” Paul asked, giving Annie ‘Puppy Dog Eyes’. Annie shook her head again, fully aware of the childish tricks Paul learned from Diana.
“Pretty please with sugar on top?” Tommy asked, also giving Annie ‘Puppy Dog Eyes’.
“Sorry, you guys, you just have to wait and find out.” Annie stated.
“Aw, c’mon! Tell us! Or at least give us a hint, especially about that video you’re in, the one that hasn’t been shown yet.” Diana moaned.
“Not a chance, Di-Di.” Annie shook her head once more.
“Alright, you three, that’s enough. She won’t say anything, so stop bugging her.” Michael stepped in before there was a possibility of a catfight.
“Thanks, Michael.” Annie told Michael, smiling warmly at him. He smiled back bashfully.
“Oh, for the love of Tapioca Pudding, why don’t you two hook the fuck up already? You two already sound and act like you’re already together, just make it official, for Christ sake!” Diana groaned loudly. Annie, who had just started taking a drink from her bottle of water, spat out what she hadn’t swallowed yet all over Diana’s face in shock.
“Applehead and Annie? Together?” Tommy exclaimed.
“Eww! Applehead’s like out big brother! That’d be totally weird and gross!” Paul remarked, looking disgusted. Annie wiped her mouth with the back of her right hand, coughing up what was left of the water she had been drinking.
“How many times do we have to tell you, Di?” Annie started to say once she was able to speak without coughing.
“We are NOT a couple!” Annie exclaimed with Michael at the same time.
“Sure could’ve fooled me.” Diana scoffed, running her hands over her face to clean off the water that Annie spat all over her. She then shook her head, spraying droplets of water on her brothers. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to clean my face and shirt.” Diana announced. She then left the group, heading right for the nearest bathroom.
“Your sister needs to get laid, seriously.” Peter remarked, walking up behind Annie, making her let out an ‘eep’. Peter was in similar clothing like Annie’s - a gold and red sparkling tank top, tight gold pants, and gold boots.
“What’re you trying to do, kill me?” Annie asked the teenager.
“You know you like it when I do that.” Peter smirked.
“Like I’m gonna admit that!” Annie huffed, turning away angrily.
“Whatever.” Peter muttered. He then noticed Michael, Tommy, and Paul. “Hey, guys, enjoying the show so far?” Peter asked the three.
“It’s been good so far. Some of them were pretty good, like that first band. The ones who did ‘Can You Feel It’. They were really good.” Tommy replied.
“I liked the guy who did ‘Rock with You’ and the girl who sang ‘Got to be there’. That one group who did ‘ABC’, though, was kinda… blah.” Paul put in. Peter laughed, then looked at Michael.
“And what about you, ‘Daryl’?” Peter asked Michael, referring to him in his secret identity. Michael shot the young man a cold look before he spoke.
“It’s been entertaining. A litte embarrassing, though, to watch people do the songs I did with and without my brothers. There were some really good performances, I admit. I am curious, though, over what you’re going to sing.” Michael replied, wondering out loud.
“Like with Annie, you’ll have to wait and see.” Peter smiled.
“Well that stinks...” Tommy pouted.
“Trust me, you guys, it’ll be worth it in the end.” Annie assured the group. She then checked at clock that was in the hallway. “Damn, I gotta hit wardrobe and get ready for act 2.” Annie cursed. She then turned to Peter. “You’re going before me, so you better get going, too. I’ll be right behind you.” Annie told him.
“Right.” Peter nodded. He then turned, speaking softly “I wouldn’t mind being right behind you, if you…”
“What was that, Mr. Riley?” Michael asked coldly, catching what the teenager was saying. Peter nearly jumped several feet into the air.
“N-nothing!” Peter exclaimed, really nervously as he ran off.
“Tell me he didn’t just try to hit on me…” Annie groaned as soon as Peter had rounded the corner and was out of sight.
“Ok, I won’t.” Paul said.
“Hey, Applehead, why was he scared of you there?” Tommy asked Michael.
“Oh, Michael once threatened to hurt Peter if he insulted any of you guys, any of my friends, or me.” Annie replied blithely with a shrug. Tommy and Paul stared up at Michael in shock.
“Well, hehe, he was insulting Annie a-about what happened to, erm, Aimee.” Michael explained with a small nervous laugh, a bit embarrassed from Annie’s casual revelation.
“Oh.” Tommy whispered.
“What did he say?” Paul asked innocently.
“I’ll tell you when you’re a bit older. Let’s find Diana and get back to our seats.” Michael answered hastily.
“Ok.” Tommy and Paul relented, the latter sulking.
“Catch you guys after the show.” Annie waved as she turned to head back to the dressing room. Tommy and Paul nodded, then ran off to find Diana. Michael started after them, but stopped, hesitating, and turned to stare at Annie. Annie also stopped and turned to stare at Michael. The two shared the glance for a few seconds before Annie smiled warmly at Michael, causing him to smile, blushing softly. Then the two went their separate ways.

Act two of the show was everything from the 80’s, which included Thriller, Bad, and Victory. Some highlights that stood out for Michael and Annie’s family included a spectacular ballet performance to “Human Nature”, a cheerleading performance to “Wanna Be Starting Something”, and a full “Thriller” dance with a dozen of people dressed as zombies. Peter’s performance, as mentioned briefly, was before Annie’s and it was to “Bad”, with the young man dressed all in leather and black, performing the song live. Michael had to admit that the young man was quite good, but Diana muttered loudly that Michael was much better than him.
Then the M.C. introduced the next person once Peter left the stage.
“Annette Craig is a senior with an interest in drawing and acting. She has appeared in several school plays since she was a freshman and was a large part in organizing this tribute since this is her last year here. So give a round of applause for our next performer: Annette Craig!” the M.C. introduced, clapping his hands after speaking. The lights dimmed to darkness as the curtains pulled away.
“I wonder what song she’s going to sing.” Alison mused to Michael and Maggie.
“Who knows? It’s probably one that’s special to her.” Maggie shrugged.
“She only said it was one of her favorites and one she claimed that she could do justice if she sang it.” Diana recalled what her sister had told her earlier.
“Whatever it is, I bet she’ll do a wonder-.” Michael smiled, but was cut off when he heard a familiar synthesized opening. “Oh no…” Michael whispered, realizing what she was going to do. Then, they heard Annie’s voice.
“HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!” Annie shouted from the darkness. Then, with a striking chord, the lights on the staged flashed on and there stood Annie with one hand pointing up in the air, her back to the audience. Cheers erupted as Annie began to strut around the stage to the beginning instrumental.
The young woman wore a silvery white long sleeve shirt with a rainbow streaking across her chest, bulky looking pants of the same color, and a spacey looking militaristic jacket. She wore bulky looking silver-white gloves and boots. Her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail and she had on contact lenses instead of her glasses.
Yes, to everyone’s surprise, Anne was Captain EO.
She walked to the microphone stand and began to sing, dancing in front of the microphone as she belts out the song.
“We're takin' over
we have the truth
this is our mission
to see it through
Don't point your finger
not dangerous
this is our planet
you're one of us.” Annie sang, rocking her hips and popping her shoulders to the beat.
“Is this…?” Alison whispered to Michael, who was burying his face into his hands, his face and ears bright red.
“We're sendin' out
our major love
and this is our
message to you
the planets are linin' up
we're bringin' brighter days
they're all in line
waitin' for you” Annie then launched into a quick spin and grabbed the microphone.
“You're just another part of me!” Annie shouted. She then removed the microphone from the stand and began to walk the stage, throwing in a “Hee-hee, ooo” as she strutted.
“Alright, Annie!!” Tommy shouted, standing along with Paul and Diana, plus about half of the audience.
“GO CAPTAIN EO!!” Diana screamed, her hands cupped around her mouth to amplify her voice. Annie shot a grin and continued on singing, dancing, and playing to the audience.
Michael watched on in amazement and some embarrassment. He couldn’t help but wonder why she had picked this song of all things. He had a feeling it might have to do with the fact she danced on Captain Eo and this was one of the two songs from it, so that might’ve been a reason. He also had to wonder when Annie got so good when it came to dancing. Had she been holding back all this time?
Pretty soon, Michael’s thoughts were interrupted when Annie left the stage to loud applause, signaling that she was done performing. He stood up with Alison, Maggie, and the two boys, applauding loudly for the young woman.
The rest of the show was the rest of the Bad Album, including the video project, which was a music video to “Smooth Criminal” with Annie as an innocent girl who witnessed a murder of her friend, “Annie”, and was running from the “Smooth Criminal” that was trying to get her. All the while, a mysterious man - the ‘singer’ of the song - is watching and ends up saving her from the “Smooth Criminal” as the ‘police’ rush to stop the criminal.
The finale of the show was everyone that had performed coming together to sing “We Are the World” and then “Man in the Mirror”, which received thunderous applause from everyone in the theatre.
Tommy and Paul were literally bouncing in their seats as everyone came out to do the curtain call and bows. Diana was whistling and applauding while Marty let out some cheers while recording. Maggie was cheering loudly, jumping up and down while Alison applauded normally, amused by the actions of her children. Michael applauded loudly, trying his hardest not to give away his real identity, but the giant smile on his face when Annie came out to bow, still in her Captain Eo costume, showed how proud he was of his dear friend.Part two coming right up.
