Good vs. Evil ...

I am a firm believer that in life, nobody is all good and on the same note, nobody is all evil. With Soul of Moons, I really wanted to explore how blurred those lines can become. Especially when it seems that everybody's out to get you. From the start, you kinda get the feel that Raina is the only one who wouldn't mind physically harming another human being. I went out of my way to make sure despite that, Raina is likeable. She's my little anti-hero. She's not all good but then again, she does take a certain perverse pleasure that people are alarmed by her presence. With Archer, everyone perceives him as the resident optimistic. You start to see cracks in that shell as time goes on. To be honest, writing for Archer is really fun because his Element is the most complex. I mean, get real, would you tell anybody if somebody bitch slapped you with some moss? Nope? Didn't think so. Garrett is a challenge for me because he is very self serving. He's rather selfish but as time goes on, you realize it's because he kinda takes his family for granted. He doesn't picture a day when they won't be there so he treats them as such. Except for Zo. Writing their arguments gives me such joy! They go at it for at least three paragraphs before I allow someone, usually Coral, to break them up.
On the evil side of things, outside of Spews and Malthus, there are no clear evil doers in the Soul of Moons universe. Poppy Creaks is in it for her son. That fact is made clear on day one... As soon as they find out about her. As for Lux, well, I love Lux. I love writing for nutty people. Sue me. She's a special brand of crazy tho' because it's her one sided relationship that controls her. I like exploring what happens when obsession festers while wishing for something you cannot have.
For me, since I always base characters on people I know, I sometimes forget to develop characters because I know the people. It took me awhile to remember I was writing for other people. Not just myself... So yeah... exploring what can motivate actions whether good or evil really enhanced my abilities.
