Casshern
A sci-fi flick laden with CG and other special effects, takes place in a bleak, war-torn future. It's apparently based on a really old anime that is NOTHING like the movie except for the title. The movie was actually pretty sad! I was expecting more mindless action... I still really enjoyed it though--especially toward the end. It's directed by a music video director (I believe he's Utada's husband, which would explain why she wrote a single for the movie....but I could be mistaken about that), and his cinematography is really interesting. In some scenes it really does feel like a music video rather than a movie and the effect is pretty refreshing (or stupid. depends on the scene). I've got my fingers crossed for an All-region DVD print. It's pretty big, so I'm hoping there's a good chance of it, anyway.

Ju-on: The Grudge
This is the basis for the American remake starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge). It's a horro flick that revolves around a house that's cursed with the angry spirits of a family that died horrible deaths. Some parts were really freaky scary, but I also laugh out loud at other parts because they were just so ridiculous. Now I really want to see the re-make!!

Howl's Moving Castle, aka ハウルの動く城</i>
For those who don't know, this is the newest GHIBLI MOVIE!! Also for those who don't know, Ghibli is the animation studio for those Miyazaki anime's that everyone is crazy for, like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
Anyway, my Japanese is pretty good by now so I understood most of the movie, despite a convuluted plot. I really liked it! The premise: like all Miyazaki movies the protagonist is a young, brave female, except there's a twist: early on she gets cursed and is aged into a 90-year-old granny. Ha hah!! The title character, Howl, is a young wizard of prodigous skill. He lives in a HUGE "castle" that, as the name implies, moves. It's really cool to watch, actually. Howl is cool to watch too, since he's kind of sexy... =P Also of note: this movie is based on an English novel by the same name.
