Hm. As part of my "catch up on backlog" goals, I finished the first half of the series -- found it enjoyable, mostly because Satsuki and her minions are WIN. And because the dude fanservice is way more over the top than the female fanservice, and I guess I kinda have to appreciate a show with equal opportunity fanservice (with blatant male gaze gags, sure, but an awful lot of magical boy transformation sequences too :P). I was also amused that Ryuko is basically your typical hotblooded shounen hero, but genderflipped. I also liked the revolutionary/reformation theme (the assimilation episode was predictable and kinda heavyhanded but nonetheless satisfying).
... And then just when I was thinking I kinda shipped Satsuki/Ryuko I went and spoiled myself. Oops.
Since a huge motivator for me watching the series was the UST between them, now I'm kinda like goddammit. Based on spoilers, there are a whole bunch of backstory things I'm gonna hate. Like pretty much everything, in fact. (3 key things actually -- the problem is that these 3 things are all on my list of Most Hated Backstory Tropes Ever. One of them I might be able to tolerate on its own, but not all three... And in context, even the tolerable one makes me unhappy for shallow reasons.)
I don't wanna dissect the tropes in question since I didn't watch them in context, but I just really hate when strong female characters (I resort to this flawed descriptor because I'm too lazy to think of a better one) are undermined by really stupid Freudian issues.
So I'm stopping here because I like the Satsuki currently in my head and don't want to mar her pristine image (lol) and I adore Team Evil and their dynamics and because Mako and her family really irritate me (even though I very much appreciate what they mean to Ryuko).
Sure, I'd love to find out more about Team Nudist (GDI MIKI SHINICHIRO, I KNEW IT WAS YOU), but whatevs. Don't really feel any drive to finish now. (The reason I paused and got spoiled was because I was starting to feel the plot lacking beneath all the glitter and innuendo. [Already sat through Star Driver... :P])
... The world needs more Satsukis. Sigh.
