Notes: Clearly I have a problem because I can't go walking in an old European city without something like this intruding in my head.
Annabeth was silent as they strolled down the narrow cobblestone paths. Her expression as she stared at the archaic buildings lining the streets was one of intent scrutiny, as though she meant to fix their designs permanently in her brain.
She probably was. They couldn’t go five minutes in any European city without Percy’s girlfriend getting all architecture-crazy on him.
‘You have that look on your face again,’ he said. ‘The one that says you’ve gone far into the past. Come back to me.’
‘It’s just-these are really old, Percy. Hundreds, even thousands of years old. Nothing in America even comes close. I mean, this stuff makes everything back home seem so temporary.’
‘Give it time.’ He pointed to a stone façade dated in the 1300s. ‘I bet whoever made this one didn’t think it’d last this long. Unless they were as nuts as you about architecture, then they were probably intending it to last a lifetime.’
Annabeth punched his arm. ‘You really think my stuff will last that long?’
‘Sure. I mean, take your new cabins at camp. In a thousand years, everyone’s gonna go, “the great Annabeth Chase built that!” The same way you’re going on about these buildings.’
Annabeth laughed and tucked her fingers into the crook of his elbow. ‘I can’t even imagine. Where will we even be, then?’
Percy curled his arm around her waist, drawing her closer. ‘I don’t know,’ he murmured against her hair, ‘but as long as we’re still together a thousand years from now, anywhere’s fine by me.’
