I also finally listened to Danger Days properly, and my unspoilery reaction is that I don't immediately love it the way I did Pretty Odd or Folie a Deux or Accelerate, but I like it more than I initially did No Line On the Horizon.
I spent the entire first listening going, "Wait, wait, I KNOW that song!" so...I'm enthusiastic, but I suspect that's largely to do with nostalgia, and I'm not sure how well it'll stand up to repetition? But we'll see.
Kat and I both agree one of the songs (Summertime? I think? I forget right now) reminds us HARDCORE of U2 - thoughts? But we'll see how it goes, yeah, I am pretty positive that it's going to grow on me more anyhow.
I think it's actually Savage Garden, but yeah, the sound is similar from the same period. I'm sort of...distracted by the way that it's exactly as if someone put my high school and college music collection in a blender and poured the results over the cartoon network?
I might be thinking of the wrong song right now, tbf. I will check when I am home w/ my iTunes. ALSO I remembered what I actually wanted to ask - is it just me or does the beginning of Vampire Money make Gerard sound more like he's hitting "bad AUSTRALIAN accent" than what he's actually aiming for?
I enjoy your description though! The 'poured results over the cartoon network' is exactly right.
I think he's going for British, actually. It's almost a quotation from an early punk track, but I'm going to have to think about it to remember which one. (It's right there, I was actually able sing along to the first set of notes, but I'm drawing a blank on the name.) Let me sleep on it, I'll get back to you with the original version?
The intro guitar part is "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello. I'm still trying to remember where the spoken bit is from. Might be one of his early television appearances.
