I met Patrick Rothfuss yesterday and told him his books were hilarious. They're also kind of literary masterpieces, so that probably isn't the one thing I should have said to him, but it did prompt him taking an entertaining picture with me, so. I can't regret it too much.
Yesterday involved me saying weird things to people in general, really. I was so sleep deprived I spent the first half of the day feeling physically ill and the second half talking without a filter or much coherence to people (buy with a completely straight face, because expressions take energy) such as Ryan North, the guy that makes the dinosaur webcomics, a classmate from high school who already thought I was a little strange, and a friend I see once every few months with whom I have almost nothing in common.
Also yesterday we showed family friends the first episode of firefly. Some time ago someone commented to me that Kaylee and Simon had no actual chemistry in the show and that Simon and [name I couldn't remember] really, really did. Imagine my surprise to discover upon rewatching that that someone was Mal and that it really was very convincing. I mean, I love Kaylee and would love for her to have a romantic interest, but all of the Kaylee/Simon bits were telling rather than showing. From the pilot, I would be more ready to believe there would be Kaylee/Book or Kaylee/Jayne than Kaylee/Simon. I think they had the misfortune to cast two actors that were great for their characters but had no chemistry and tried to cover that up by having Kaylee repeatedly state her attraction to Simon. This a) makes it seem forced and b) is a statement that the attraction is superficial, which naturally leads to c), which is that repeated statement of something by a character that early in a show is usually put up to be counteracted later to show character development - see Eliza Bennet.
Tl;dr don't talk to people on half an hour of sleep and I think I ship Simon/Mal now. Whaaaat.
