'Dates', as it turned out, were much harder than they seemed. It was strange, because they'd always come natural to the Doctor and Rose. Or so he had thought. Apparently, dates did not involve face stealing aliens or empathic child-like jelly fish creatures or beasts that thought they were Satan.

And so it was time to try a real date. The Doctor had put on a purple tie for it even, because that was fancy and met Rose at the spot they'd chosen. He'd considered getting her flowers but decided to forgo them in favour of a few still fresh scones and some jelly babies.

"Hullo, Rose!" He gave a cheerful wave, then rubbed at his neck. Same something about her clothes! said a voice. And like a good sane person, he listened. "Your clothes still look nice."

Rose looked down and her clothes, and tugged a wrinkle out of her dress. "You think so?" She grinned at him. "Thanks. Nice tie."

Noticing that he was a bit awkward, and thinking that he probably didn't do this too often, she couldn't hold back a little laugh as she walked up, and linked arms with him. "So. Where to, then, Doctor?"

The arm linking was comforting, bringing the Doctor back to familiar ground. "Right then! I was thinking a lovely little secluded beach on the other side of the island."

Already he was leading her off for it. "There's something rather special tonight."

"There is?" Rose grinned at him. "Are you gonna tell me what it is, or keep it a secret?"

She stopped briefly in her tracks. "No invasions, right?"

The Doctor gave a slight pout. "What's wrong with an invasion?" Realizing how that sounded, he quickly added, "Stopping an invasion, anyway. I'm not fond of hosting them."

But then he grinned and laughed, pushing away some of the large, tropical leaves. "It's a surprise! We'll be there soon. Just beyond this stretch. Impatient?"

"I'm always impatient," Rose replied, nudging him. "And there's nothing wrong with stopping them, really. But there shouldn't be any, if you're trying to outdo Will."

"Well, aside from the stray dolphin, there shouldn't be any problems."

The Doctor led Rose through the jungle to the other side of the island, where the beach was longer and a bit more rocky. He found a nice patch of cool white sand and shrugged off his coat laying it out for the two of them. Settling down upon it, he pointed out towards the horizon beyond the waves.

"You see, we're lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time," he explained. "In, oooh, a minute, there's going to be a supernova out there. It'll light up the sky. Can't miss it!"

Rose settled next to him, already excited. "A supernova? That's brilliant!" She practically wiggled with excitement, laughing. "I may have to take back everything I said about you dating. You do know how to show a girl a good time."

She paused momentarily. "May, though. Jury's still out. There's still time for aliens to ruin it all."

"Oi, no faith in me at all?" The Doctor laid back, propped up by his elbows. "Really, this planet is quite peaceful. A few wars and things but nothing worse than Earth. Unless you think it's worse because sea life is involved..."

He trailed off and tipped his head in thought. He could feel time moving and sense where it was going. Which, in this case, was perfect for sensing the supernova.

"And now!" he announced. Instantly a star above the horizon flickered and exploded, light spreading across the ocean before it settled to hang in the sky like a second moon.

Rose watched, a smile on her face. "It's beautiful." She settled back and mirrored the Doctor's position, and nudged him. "And of course I have faith in you."

She waited a bit longer in silence, before speaking up again. "And thanks. For showing this to me."

The Doctor smiled softly, still staring out at the supernova. "You're quite welcome. Not a bad date, is it? You've got the ocean and sand and a supernova and, well," he paused, clicking his tongue, "me, of course, which just automatically makes this an incredible date."

Rose laughed. "The best date I've ever been on," she conceded. "Remind me to tell you the next time I go on a date, so you can try to upstage it again."
