I don't have too many friends here on LiveJournal, but I was hoping what little bunch I did have wouldn't mind lending me a hand and seeing how far this goes

Perhaps, but my not-mainstream (and crappy taste) is pretty much bad jpop and kpop, which are not English. Obviously. So I can't link them here!
I'll add more to this list slowly over time and I'm too lazy to link to examples now so you get to do that yourself, but! Oldies are what I grew up on and I still love now.
The Monkees - everything ever! But their theme song is cute, Daydream Believer, Listen to the Band, Randy Scouse Git, Pleasant Valley Sunday
The Beatles - only really starting to get into them, but I have loved Eleanor Rigby for years. But it is sort of depressing.
The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn. Very pretty.
Simon and Garfunkel - The Sounds of Silence. Very surreal.
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall is obvious, but still awesome
Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth.
Beach Boys - Everything! Um Little Surfer Girl, Surfin' USA, Heroes and Men, Slop John B, Kokomo, Wouldn't it be Nice
The Four Seasons - Big Girl's Don't Cry, Book of Love
I can't get into oldies for one reason or another, with a few random exceptions that don't come to mind at the moment. I'm not sure what it is about them but I think they don't have enough... impact? For me. It might just be a product of the age and the recording technology.
Edit: Oh, I was gonna mention this last time but forgot and there doesn't seem to be an edit posts button for replies but I thoroughly enjoyed the Vienna Teng and Nerina Pallot songs! Thanks muchly. And Jason Mraz is one of the few English artists that I'm at least passingly familiar with, surprisingly. I quite love "You and I Both" from him.
