16 in 30 - "I make this look GOOD"

You should of course know that no internet could ever stop me from 30 in 30, but what you don't know is that despite no internet, I am still making this post (and posting it) from my computer.

What started as simply tapping into an unsecured hotspot on my PSP from my bed has gone far, far beyond the car of nerdom.

I am stealing internet, yes. But I am not just tapping into a signal using a laptop. My computer doesn't even have a wireless card. Drastic measures were needed, and I rose to the occasion.

At first I figured- is there a way to use the PSP as a wireless card? In the middle of my search I realized I should not be trying to get the PSP to act as a wireless card- but that big routerthingy in front of me would do nicely.

An investigation into my router turned up facts that while it was possible, I would need to do some.. special modifications.

I had to reflash my router's firmware several times.. keep in mind that every firmware version I needed to reflash to, I had to download it off the internet onto my PSP, connect my PSP to my mac, and then flash the firmware. Most of the time it failed miserably.

But a few times, it worked. I finally got a third party firmware solution that allowed my router to act as a client/bridge to the unsecured network.

The came configuring it. The wiki for this was enormous- comprising of over 40 steps and saying I had to have physical access to the router connected to the internet.

Well, I am a super nerd. I don't need physical access. Stumbling through the instructions, I succeeded where others have failed, and am now not only stealing internet, but rebroadcasting it (secured by WEP now of course!) through the apartment.

And all this because the DSL doesn't get installed til Tuesday.

Oh SSID Bucky. You never knew how unsecured you really were.
