Day 12
What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?
In your own space, tell us what it is that gets you to cross that line into fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
You know, I'm not sure I am that fannish?
Hanson are one of the only bands that's really gotten me going, and the only one I've stayed devoted to for so long. And it's kind of impossible to explain why they've done it to me. They're just something else. Their music were there for me when no one and nothing else really was. It didn't take long for me to get into the fanfic as well (I was already aware of fanfic thanks to the Backstreet Boys). I guess I have a little bit of a tinhat in me (see my interest in Larry Stylinson), and no boundaries whatsoever, since the only ships I have are real people and a few of them brothers. Obviously those sort of dynamics work for me--see my love for Kings of Leon. But it always starts with the music first.
But when it comes to media fandoms? There are tons I like, all across the board, but I don't really know what they have in common, and I don't seek out fic for many of them. There are a few, like the various Sherlock Holmes adaptations and Supernatural that I do enjoy on a shippy level, but for others... I don't know. If I can think of anything they have in common, I suppose a lot of them are British and they tend to have snappy dialogue or a nice, sarcastic voice. But again, I'm perfectly content just watching/reading these things.
I also don't write for any fandoms other than RPF ones, mostly out of fear that I'll fuck it up. And again, since I don't feel the need to read anything other than the source canon, I rarely have ideas for it either.
Although, I do plan to expand my media fanfic a bit (in the relatively near future) with a Hanson/Welcome to Night Vale crossover...
