okay real quick
I wasn't going to make one of these but I'm too much of an attention whore not to.
I do meme. I read. I comment. I comment!porn. I post SPN gifs (*GASP*). I post pics of hot old dudes. I get my academia on. But I also scroll.
I read wanky posts through my fingers because I learned not to engage (BUT SOMETIMES IT'S TOO HARD NOT TO, OK). Most of the time it works. More often than not, someone much more eloquent than me will try to make a point and make it better than I ever will.
Last night was one of the most tiring nights on the meme in a while - THAT THREAD WENT ON FOR 300+ COMMENTS. AND MANY HOURS. It was not a pleasant read. I scrolled through most of it. That's not even mentioning the religious wank from the night(day?) before. I stand by the fact that I firmly believe that was the work of trolls, trolls or really hateful people. THAT IS NOT WHO EVERYONE ON THE MEME IS. Many many amazing cool, hilarious people hang out there, too (me included, obv).
BUT ALSO. I don't like people getting wanked on for appearance, religion, ethnicity or anything else. I really don't think anyone really does (right?). I've been wanked on the meme plenty of times to know it's not fun, and while it was not even close to being the worst - it sucked. I've also had people call me out, discuss things I posted flocked, tell me there are things said about me on filters - THAT SHIT FUCKING SUCKS GUYS. But I don't blame the meme for telling me that, though I am sorry someone's flock got apparently broken, like mine has many times.
My fandom experience is multi-layered. Meme is just one of those places that make it up. I'm going to keep going there and ignoring all the bad and squeeing joyfully any time Percival's mentioned or a Bradley thread doesn't get derailed. There are happy times to be had yet. It's not all bad, just "when it's bad, it's awful" and difficult to look past. But if you don't like it, I do think it's mostly easy to avoid - unless it's days like today. In which case - sorry.
Hope everyone finds their happy place in fandom and we can all co-exist somewhat amicably. If you think you need to defriend me over this - it'll suck 'cause I love my friends' list a lot, but I guess I get it and frankly prefer it over being put on filters for the sole of excluding just me. This isn't middle school. Do whatever makes fandom/LJ a better experience for you. ♥
ALSO. WHILE I'M RAMBLING: the mods over there are human. they do their hardest. they make mistakes. they are not omnipresent. they are also (from my experience) very receptive if you approach them via PM or the mod post. if there's anything questionable going on - go to them 'cause they're the ones who can screen comments, freeze threads, do IP logging - the few things that do have a semblance of control over the meme (i'm not saying they will - not psychic here, but that's your best bet).
i'll just be over there, then.
