When the strangers arrived through the ring, there was a surge of excitement among the people living in the city. Ronon Dex had yet to meet them, but he had spoken to Tyre and some of the others who had, and they had painted a picture of powerful off-worlders who had the potential to become valuable allies.
Ronon was sitting on a bench outside the hospital where his mate, Melena, worked. He had managed to pry her away from her duties long enough to have some lunch and to chat about the newcomers.
“They say they live in the city of the Ancestors,” Ronon told her.
Melena took a bite of fruit. “Do you think this is possible, Ronon?”
Shaking his head, Ronon said, “I honestly don’t know, Melena. But Tyre says that they have advanced technology. Far more advanced than anything we have. He says he’s seen it.”
“If they’re so advanced, why haven’t the Wraith culled them?”
This was a good question, and it was one he had asked himself. “Well,” he reasoned. “If they live in the city of the Ancestors, that probably gives them more protection than others have.” Suddenly, he broke into a grin. “Melena. Do you know what an alliance with a powerful race could mean to Sateda?”
“Yes,” she said, laying her hand on his. “And I hope they’re all you want them to be.”

Ronon hurried to the ring to greet the off-worlders. This was to be their second visit, and he was determined to see them for himself. He had volunteered for the job of showing them around the city. Their doctor had expressed an interest in seeing their medical facilities, so Ronon had suggested to the commander that his Melena would be an ideal source information.
As the strangers came through, a breathless and excited Ronon slipped up beside Tyre. “Made it,” he whispered.
“Only just,” Tyre said. “Be forewarned. Their leader had an odd sense of humor. And one of the others is very difficult to get along with.” Clearing his throat, Tyre stepped forward to greet the strangers. “Hello, it is good that you could join us again.”
“Well,” one of the men said. “We’re glad to you’re having us back.”
“Sheppard,” Tyre said to the man who had just spoken. “I’d like to introduce you to Specialist Ronon Dex. He’ll be showing you and your people the city. His mate works at the hospital. Ronon, this is Lt. Colonel John Sheppard.”
Sheppard smiled and extended his hand. “Pleased to meet you, Ronon.” He gestured toward the others. “This is Doctor Rodney McKay, Teyla Emmagen, and Doctor Carson Beckett. Nice city you have here.”
“It’s home,” Ronon said. He shook the Sheppard’s hand and made a mental note of his strong grip.
“Well, we’d sure love to see the sights. I don’t suppose you have any amusement parks.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Kidding.”
Ronon gazed at the man. He had an odd way about him, just as Tyre had warned. Still, he seemed friendly enough, and he and his people were brave enough to make contact with Sateda despite the risks posed to them if the Wraith discovered the fledging alliance.
Flashing a grin, Ronon motioned for Sheppard and his companions to follow him. “We’ve never met another race with advanced technology,” he said. “The Wraith usually wipe them out.”
“Oh, they’ve tried,” Sheppard said with a breath. “Came close a few months ago. Lost one of my own men. Have they tried to attack you?”
“More than once,” Ronon said grimly. “One of these days, we won’t be able to withstand them.”
Sheppard slapped Ronon on the shoulder. “Well, at you’re not alone anymore. We can face the Wraith together. I think we’re gonna be good friends, Ronon Dex.”
