Because I'm me, I'm going to have a separate entry for the upcoming previews. I'm leaving a big space between the preview thoughts and the Dark Knight thoughts, so those that haven't seen the film can still read the first part if they choose.
Quantum of Solace: *squeals* Yeah, I'd seen a preview earlier, but seeing it on the big screen just makes me want to see it that much more. Also, I think they added a few scenes since I saw it a few weeks ago. So anyway, Casino Royale has been the best Bond movie to date, which gives me high hopes for this one. It comes out around my birthday, so I will totally give myself that movie as a gift.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: Oh, I love Brendan Frasier. *feels the love* I am so excited for this movie, and I have been since I saw it announced. I unabashedly loved the first two, and I miss Rick O'Connell. And John Hannah. We can't forget that lovable goof ball. Adding Jet Li only turns up the geek-o-meter for me. August 1st, people!
Swing Vote: Meh.
Tropic Thunder: Okay, I love Robert Downey, Jr. But this isn't gonna happen. I have a bizarre sense of humor, but the humor I saw in the clips really just looks inane and obvious.
Body of Lies: Could be good. I don't know. I tend to have issues with any project featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, and I doubt seeing it will be a priority.
The Watchmen: Again, I'd seen the trailer, but seeing on the big screen brings a new level of squeegasm to the table, especially since I can see the shots of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Comedian way better than I can on a tiny (albeit widescreen) monitor. You know, way back 6 or so years ago when I first noticed Jeffrey Dean Morgan on JAG, I had no idea that people all over the internet would be joining me in squeeing about him. It does a fangirl good.
I've heard some say that Nite Owl looks silly in his costume. Hint: Of course he does. In the real world, a person who dressed up as a superhero would look silly. I do agree with those who have said that Ozymandias looks a bit obviously dark. That goes down to costume design, though. The actor looks fine. I'm really impressed with Dr. Manhattan and the overall look of the movie.
I'm going to be so obnoxiously excited when this movie comes out.
Terminator Salvation: I'm totally there.
Overall: Damn fine movie! I'm one of those nitpicker fans, and I thought it was fantastic. I've heard some complain that the movie was too dark. Hint: It's supposed to be. The acting was fabulous across the board, and the pacing was just right.
The Joker: Might as well start here, since this is the Big Topic. Did Heath knock it out the park? Oh yes. He was deliciously creepy, sometimes to the point that I wanted to turn away. His mannerisms, his walk, his reactions in the background? This is a villain we should fear. Do I prefer the Nicholson Joker or the Ledger Joker? Ledger, by a mile. This is a wonderful legacy for Heath to leave us with. :(
Batman, Alfred, and Lucius: Not much to say here of real depth. Bale did a fantastic job, as usual. His interactions with Alfred and Lucius were spot on, and I think Bale's performance in this movie might have been a little more nuanced than the last film. His hope in Dent, his need for Rachel. It was all well done. Caine and Freeman were great, as usual.
Rachel: I SO prefer Maggie Gyllenhaal to Katie Holmes. Again, not a lot to say here, expect that I found her character infinitely more sympathetic and unforced this time around.
Jim Gordon: Gary Oldman has really made Jim Gordon his own. That little monologue to his son at the end of the film could have been really cheesy, but he sold it. Am I the only one who squeed out loud when they finally called him Commissioner Gordon? :D
Scarecrow: Yeah, I know he didn't do much, but I thought he should have his own entry because he's adorable.
Random Sighting: So Torchwood fans! Did you see who was on one of the boats during the scenes where the Joker gave each boat a remote control device to blow up the other ship? Matt Rippy! If you don't know who that is, shame on you! He's one half of one of the greatest TV kisses ever: The real Captain Jack Harkness! I sat there looking at the screen thinking, "I know him... WAIT! That's the Captain!" So yes, I managed to have a Torchwood fangirl moment during Batman. :D
Harvey Dent: Okay, I'm going to come out and say it. Aaron Eckhart gave the best performance of the entire movie. Out of a cast of fantastic actors, he rocked the hardest. The way they built Harvey up was believable and well-managed. He wasn't over-the-top. Seriously, I believed in Harvey Dent. The thing here is, anyone who is at least moderately familiar with the Batman mythos knows the whole time what's coming, and you don't want to be disappointed. You don't want to wait the whole movie for him to become Two Face and have it be anticlimactic or silly. This? It was just right. Overblown lame music didn't go off in the background or anything. It just happened, and it was great. And when you first see the reveal of his Dent as Two Face? SO good. Seriously, Aaron Eckhart just made me a happy fan. Two Face is my favorite Batman villain, and after the lame performance Tommy Lee Jones gave, I was a little concerned about how Dent's story would play out. I didn't need to be worried, because it was outstanding!
And on that note, I'll wrap.
