I just took a nap and had a weird dream--something about locking my keys in my apartment, forgetting my purse at home, and being sold the wrong movie ticket.
Even my dreams are angsty.
Anyway, I wanted to comment a bit on a couple of episodes of Torchwood. I've read loads of spoilers for the upcoming season, so I'll try to leave those out for people on my flist who haven't been spoiled.
This is the second time I've seen this one, and I liked it even more this time. It was this episode that opened Tosh up as a character for me. I really sympathized with her throughout the episode, especially given what seemed like complete caddishness from Owen.
When I first saw this episode, I wanted to transport Owen to the center of the sun along with the killer alien, but this time through, I tried to hold back the knee-jerk reactions and give him the benefit of the doubt. I still think he was a bit of a cad, but I found myself sympathizing with him far more than I had, especially when the events of this episode are taken within the context of the rest of the season.
I'm kind of glad this episode muddied Gwen up a bit.
I wanted to hear more of Ianto's inner thoughts, since what we did hear was disturbing. I'm glad we saw that he and Tosh apparently had some kind of talk after the hostage situation was worked out. Of course, since we couldn't actually hear what they were saying to each other, we don't know how in depth their conversation was, but I like to think they talked a few things out on both ends. They seem like they'd be kindred spirits and natural friends. I'd like to see them reach out to each other in that way in upcoming episodes.
Jack remains a mystery, of course. I loved him in this episode, and if I wasn't still sleepy, I might try to get all deep about him, but I am, so I won't.
Okay, any possible discussion of this episode has to get the whole Jack/Ianto/stopwatch thing out of the way first, because otherwise, I'll be too distracted to talk about anything else.
Ianto: Given the placement of this episode after "Greeks Bearing Gifts," I have to wonder exactly what transpired between that episode and this one. We know that Ianto is good at faking a pleasant attitude even if he's in pain, so I'm not going to assume all was right in his world. He did seem lighter, though. I don't know. I thoroughly enjoy his propensity to come up with "cool" names for alien technology and his fixation with stopwatches. :D
He seems a bit more at peace with Jack, enough so that he was willing to proposition the guy while filling out a death certificate for a former colleague. The flirtatiousness between the two at the end was just lovely. I do wonder, though, what got them to that point. For the future, I want to see solid interaction between the two. The ambiguity was fine for season one, but now I want to see them being honest about what they do or do not mean to each other, and I want to see their relationship become overt.
Okay, what else happened in this episode? Oh yes. They brought Suzie back to life. And they killed her a few times. :p
As much as I disliked her character, I'm glad they brought her back and filled in some of the blanks about how she fit into the Torchwood team.
I tend to vacillate a lot when it comes to Gwen. I like her character, but I do long for her to share the focus with the other characters (especially Tosh and Ianto).
That was pretty ramblish, but oh well.
On an unrelated note, I love David Gray.
