With the recent spate of articles about high fructose corn syrup, particularly the Duke and Princeton studies, I got curious and took a look around our kitchen and pantry. We haven't been rigorously avoiding the stuff or anything, but I do try to be mindful of the things we eat and in particular the things we give to Malcolm. I was pleasantly surprised to find that of the piles of snack foods on hand, only one (chocolate graham crackers I had purchased to make crumbs) had HCFS. The cookies, fruit gummies, nut clusters, and cheese crackers are all HCFS-free. More surprising was the pantry check. Two typical suspects, pasta sauce and salsa (both Target's Archer Farms brand), came up clean. The only two things I found with HFCS that we semi-regularly consume were Coke and strawberry preserves. The Coke was a given, of course, but the preserves were a disappointment.
All in all, I was relatively pleased with my findings. Even our junk food is relatively unprocessed.
