This week I lost my nearly lifelong immunity to strep throat. Apparently I had scarlet fever as a small child, but nothing since. I guess the strain that's making the rounds these days is more virulent than my system could handle. Malcolm hasn't shown any signs as yet, though it certainly hitched a ride home with him from daycare; there have been several cases in multiple classes over the last couple of weeks.
Now I'm subsisting on 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours to keep the pain and swelling in my throat under control and my fever down, guiafenesin/dextromethorphan to keep my ears drained, augmentin to kill the bug, and alternate applications of hot soup and cold ice cream to soothe the discomfort. My understanding is that antibiotics tend to work pretty quickly on strep, so I should be feeling better in another 24 hours or so. Here's hoping.
