Father Dies Saving His Son From Icy River
A 36-year-old man has died while saving his 6-year-old son from an icy river in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The boy wandered onto thin ice while his family was sitting nearby. After seeing his son in danger, the man ran out to retrieve him and broke through the ice. Onlookers formed a human chain to save the father. They were both initially pulled to safety, but the father broke though the ice again. He managed to push his son into the arms of rescuers before he went under the water.
The man was submerged under the water for about a minute before rescuers managed to pull him out again using a rope. A call was placed to 911 from a cell phone at 1:25 pm while onlookers tried to revive the man. The attempts to revive the father failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's son was treated for minor injuries at the local hospital.
