[temp] Discussion Post

Aug 17, 2010 15:02

Alright, so your head honchos haven't really decided yet whether or not a discussion post would be beneficial to have. HOWEVER, I'm putting this up in regards to an incident that would really benefit from a move, and I don't want to wait for all of us to make an educated decision ( Read more... )

I agree with most of the people here, that topics must be discussed, not avoided.

Just a little general note from me, though: make the posts anon-free, because anon discussion *always* degenerates and never resolves anything. In the end everyone gets hurt and no-one learns anything from it, I'd say most times things even get worst than how they began.

Just my opinion though, because I don't participate in discussions where people can comment anon.

i have to disagree with not allowing anon comments. i agree that often people will take advantage of being anon to post trollish comments, but being anon also allows people to feel safe. i know several people on my own flist who have been raped or sexually abused but do not feel comfortable openly talking about their experience on a public discussion post. should such people not be allowed to voice their concerns just because anon commenting is turned off?

I know what you mean, but do you think that anon status really helps what we are trying to accomplish here? I think people shouldn't even have to resort to speaking about their personal experience (we know what this is about and what the trigger we are discussing is, and obviously it's easy to talk about it), but we should manage to reach a decision ( ... )

i understand the point you're making that those who have been hurt in any way shouldn't be forced to come and say "i am hurt by this b/c of such and such". no one should HAVE to do that.

but leaving anon commenting off ensures that such people at least have the choice to come here and say their part without having to identify themselves. why rob them of that?

we have a diligent mod who will step in if threads derail too much or get wanky. let's make sure we can keep the discussion going without barring any interested parties.

I appreciate the ability to remain anon because I don't really want my name too strongly attatched to the meme- less out of shame and more out of IRL privacy reasons. I suppose there's always sockpuppets, but even then... I'd rather not have to keep quiet on something I feel strongly about just because of that.

I find people manage to be crappy with or without anon. We're all working under pseudonyms, after all. *shrug*

Ok, but then couldn't we open a post somewhere else? Not on the meme? Or even locked, maybe?

And well, I offered my opinion, but for me it's ok either way, I don't want to push if you are uncomfortable. My main concern is that this place doesn't turn into one of those hateful anon memes where everyone shouts at the other and everyone gets pissed. But hopefully it won't get that bad.

I believe that's part of the purpose of making this post here, actually. So that the things that need to be discussed can be, without forcing people to go somewhere outside the bounds of the community to discuss them.

That's understandable, and a great idea. My only complaint was the anon status, but if the general opinion is that it should be allowed (and I think it is), then I'm going to suck it up in good mood.

Well, that's what our lovely mod is for- I'd like to hope that with someone watching we'll all try to mind our Ps and Qs. Anon memes are really more a free-for-all than anything, hence the vitriol.
