There were a number of things John thought he might wake up to that morning. A sore neck was almost guaranteed; his neck always hurt after sleeping on Sarah's sofa. Maybe also a passive-aggressive text from Sherlock. Or an aggressive-aggressive text. Or, if he was very lucky, maybe no text at all, and he could pretend he hadn’t had a distinctly undignified screaming match with his flatmate in front of the entire Yard. Maybe he could stick around and make Sarah breakfast and take her out, which was all he’d wanted to do in the first place.
Or maybe he’d somehow get dragged back in, even though he’d told Sherlock he was taking the weekend off (one weekend, was that really so much to ask? It wasn’t even a murder case). If John were being honest with himself, he’d admit that was what he actually expected to happen.
What he didn’t expect was to wake up to Sarah's distressed face, a pair of handcuffs, and a man in uniform looming over him.
“John Watson, you're under arrest for the murder of Sherlock Holmes.”
His first reaction was to laugh; a half panicked laugh that begged the universe to make what he’d just heard a joke. A jumble of thoughts hit him like a bulldozer: What? and I would never and The WHAT of WHO? and No, there’s a mistake and He’s fine, he has to be fine and What the bloody hell? The officer was saying something else, something about remaining silent, but he couldn’t concentrate. His leg twitched with pain
“Is Donovan having me on?” he managed.
“No.”
Then somehow he was standing and the cuffs were on. When did he stand up? He was still in pajamas. He laughed again, this time all panic. It couldn’t, they had to have something wrong, Sherlock couldn’t, and he didn’t, there had to be some giant, cosmic mistake.
He turned to Sarah, but her expression - twisted mouth, drawn eyebrows; a mix of pity, confusion, and revulsion - made his stomach turn.
“I’d like to speak to Detective Inspector Lestrade,” he declared. Lestrade would sort this.
