We had a four day prompt freeze this time because the mods needed to discuss some very important issues regarding the meme. There has been an air of unfriendliness and disrespect widespread on our meme for months now and it doesn’t promote an atmosphere of community ( ... )

I'm sad to see the rant post go because it was the one place where I got very useful advice for some rl problems and struggles, but I guess the chatter post will do if you mods are alright with it? I mean, Chatter is the place to talk about anything and everything, but I guess it could also be a place where one could seek for advice? One of the useful things the rant post did was being a place where somebody could talk about a problem they were having and get some concrete advice, could we use the chatter post for that? Please?

Of course. That's totally fine.

I like this development. Hopefully it'll see the chatter post become more active, because tbh most of the nicer threads on the rant post belong there.
I wouldn't say the rant post was terrifying but it can be a little hostile. It'll be nice to have a friendlier atmosphere around here :)

thanks mods for all your awesome work, as usual!

Least terrifying anon place I've ever frequented.

At what point does something move from asking advice (as you said was suitable for the chatter post) to ranting?

To pick an arbitrary topic, is venting about bullies okay so long as there is a request for advice at the end, or must they use an impartial and purely factual voice throughout, as saying you hate a person, even a bully, is 'not nice'?

I can see where you're coming from with the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all" rule, and I don't condone the flaming and shitstorms that go down on some fills, but saying that unless concrit is asked for (at least I think that's what your saying, that sentence seems a bit jumbled to me), we can't say anything negative ( ... )

Sorry but that was the generally accepted rule even before the mods have said that in the post above. It's always been considered rude to leave concrit here unless an author asks for it, always. So if an author doesn't want concrit for any reason whatsoever and doesn't ask for it, then don't give concrit and scroll past, that's always been the policy.

Yeah, but who cares if someone posts a crap fill -- someone might come up with something way better. There are no limits to # of fills, right?

da

I care. I'm not going to post a fill after someone has already done it badly. Say what you want about second fills but you can't argue that there are far less of them than first fills.

What?

Dude, people do post second (and third and fourth) fills for any prompt that they have inspiration for. If you have a fill written and you decide not to post it because someone else has already posted a crap fill -- that's your hang up, that's not common behavior at all. A bad fill is not some kind of poxy jinx.

I'll tell you what people don't write fills for: places where they fear they are going to be pile driven or chewed out if they write something someone doesn't like. That's a real muse killer.

I'm more likely to post a fill if someone else has done it badly, and have done at least three I can think of off hand, so we all balance out in the end.

the ones who need con-crit the most are the ones who take con-crit as a personal attack so never ask for it.

Then that's a pretty good indicator that you shouldn't be giving it when it's not asked for. No one is guaranteed a "quality fill" when they prompt here. It isn't anyone's job to make fillers shape up and it isn't the filler's job to write to anyone's specifications.

What are you supposed to do if it happens again? Scroll on by and reprompt.
