Finished reading 'Watchmen' by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons. I have to be honest and say I am not a big reader of graphic novels, and the last one I read by Alan Moore ('From Hell') I really didn't like. This time I'm a little conflicted, I didn't exactly love the story but I was taken with the idea of it being an alternative version of history with a different take on the whole superhero mythos. There was a lot going on and at times I did get a little lost (particularly with Veidt's explanation for everything) and occasionally distracted by the comic-within-a-comic plot (which I sort of preferred to the main story). I'm glad I read it though as it's nice to read something different for a change. I look forward to seeing the film.
There was a review of Omaha Perez's 'Holmes' graphic novel in '
The Baker Street Journal', it mentioned that Holmes is drug addled and Watson is a sex addict... and c'mon who doesn't want to see a version like that in print? Despite my not great love for graphic novels (I do honestly feel that 'From Hell' was a much better film than graphic novel, there was a lot going on in the sub plot of the novel that really irked me and it mostly seemed an excuse to draw very graphic sex scenes without any real need for most of them) I have ordered a copy. My interest as been piqued!
Speaking of the BSJ, if anyone is still wondering - yes I am still working on my Holmes article, I've even spent a bit of time in the British Library doing a bit of research into the types of news scandals that were around during the Victorian age. Also 'The Times' have started to put their archive online and at the moment I don't think it goes back to the 1880s I'm hoping that it soon will as I'm sure some of their upcoming court case notices might be quite useful. I think though that until my current position at work is confirmed in about 3 months it's going all going to have to take a back seat - especially as I'm in from 10am pretty much all this coming week (off to bed in a moment!).
