Another friends comparison
I have come to realize that I can see "Friends" alot more in TBBT but I have no idea where the writers are going with the R&R ending that they always talk of. No couple on friends is like Lenny... none. The only comparison you can give to R&R with them is the pretty girl/science guy and the on/off games they play. It ends there. The more I watched

So when I think about the writers comparing Lenny with Ross/Rachel it is less about the science guy/pretty girl, I mean that could be Shenny, too, even more so, because Sheldon is much more in that world than Leonard. It's about something else; Ross/Rachel's "theme" song is "With or Without you" by US which pretty much sums up the on/off relationship of the two, because they couldn't live either way. Remember in one of the last episodes of the show when Rachel says to Ross "with us, it's never off the table"? This is what characterizes R/R to me. Well, and the history of the two. Ross loved Rachel from afar for many, many years. He tried to build a love life without her, but he failed. Then again they could, sans the history, build this up for Lenny, too. Ross could be such a douche (he was a lot of the time), just like Leonard. What I find missing between Lenny is the chemistry, the feeling that you want, no NEED, them to get back together. Lenny doesn't have that. They come across like a couple of convenience. Leonard finally gets the pretty girl he always wanted. Penny is changing the kind of guy she's dating. That's all there is. That's not love. And to be honest while Ross was an idiot a lot of the time, he also did some wonderful things for Rachel - something Leonard never did, in my opinion.
Maybe we compare too much. I'm always among the first to compare, because you kind of have to ;) And as you pointed out, there are so many things similair. It's amazing how Sheldon really is a lot like Joey. Despite their huge difference in character! If we look at it in a way where we compare the shows and then think how tbbt comes later, ergo it can actually learn something from Friends. If Chuck Lorre is willing to learn something... they just need to look at what worked and what didn't. I think, essentially, Shenny is like a mix of all of three couples: Ross/Rachel, Chandler/Monica and Joey/Rachel. Only, so far, without any real ground to work on. But Chandler and Monica didn't have that either. Joey and Rachel were slowly built up. Ross and Rachel were inevitable from the get go. All of those are, in different amounts, visible in Shenny.
It's just hard to trust the writers to do what is right. If they look at last night's episode alone, they must realize what Shenny can accomplish. If they let it develop naturally. Lenny is so forced and therefore just doesn't work. We'll see that soon, so we can compare that, too :D
Ok, I kinda drifted, I'm sorry for that. Shenny is very dear to my heart, too, and it gets me rambling and stuff. Loved the comparison!

I too get on a tangent about Shenny, don't worry, can you imagine if they ever did kiss. Like half of us would die at our computers ;D

I just always think of how she had to keep a secret from leonard, because she wasnt "smart enough" for him but yet... told her secret to sheldon... whom people say treats her like crap... i would never trust someone with a secret like that if i felt they were a horrible person to me
