It is an odd day indeed when GRRM makes me smile. Well, at least in the past three years.

GRRM, also known as George R.R. Martin, is the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series I began reading in high school and promptly fell in love with. I hear tell that it is a twist of the War of the Roses story. In any case, there are at least 10 billion characters (and a 20 page index in the back of each book to boot), many of which are 100% endearing even with their flaws. Indeed, I can't recall the last time I found a series where the characters were so human. Maybe LOST... Yes, that is a good comparison. As much as I hated Sawyer and Benjamin Linus at the beginning of that series, I have come to love them both -- Sawyer just b/c he is just that damn amazing (I really just won't hear a bad word about him) but Ben b/c although he is an ASS 90% of the time, he is also an amusing man (and thus entertaining at the very least) + there is 10% of the time when he is actually a caring/good(?) man. The point is, there isn't the black and white (good v. evil) of say JRR Tolkien (I can hear the gasps man and will say, yes, I just insulted Tolkien in case you didn't believe your eyes). In GRRM's novels, like on LOST, people aren't all or nothing and I really appreciate that in a book/movie/show.

I read books 1-3 quickly and set in for the wait for book 4. Then, right before my freshman year of college GRRM announced that book 4 was so big that it would be split. This was good news b/c it meant that he had a completed book 4 and was thus now already 1/2 way through book 5. Although initially I was miffed that some characters would be altogether absent from book 4, I thought that book 5 would be right around the corner. I mean, he was 1/2 done, right?? NOT!!! Let's just say that we are STILL waiting for book 5, George! I know the man has a life and all but come on... I'm used to JK Rowling who was popping them out every other year on schedule. O what a whiner I sound like, but I just want to know what happensssss.

However, the point of today was NOT to whine but to celebrate! WAHOO! Why? No, book 5 STILL does NOT have a publication date. DARN DARN DARN. BUT, earlier in the year it was announced that HBO had agreed to pick up the pilot for a tv SERIES which they are calling A Game of Thrones (after the first book of the bunch). Then, I danced for a wee bit before the excitement wore off. After all, I thought, "What are the odds it'll get picked up??" Today though, I finally have hope again. They have announced some of the actors chosen for a few of the main characters! YAY! And I must say I think the odds that it'll get picked up have risen. Then again, I might just be biased towards the actor they have chosen to play Lord Eddard Stark, but then again who wouldn't be? I mean, come ON! It's Sean FRICKIN Bean man! *dances 'round the room* Sean Bean, Sean Bean! I admit it, I squealed when I read the news. I love that man. He is glorious and to quote my favorite Scottish man, Craig Ferguson, "It's a great day for America, everybody!"
