I'm thrilled to announce that the dance pad works fantastically with the modifications. I was a little worried that the plastic carpet protecter stuff I used would be too thick and would prevent the dance pad from recognizing which bits of itself were being stepped on, but it seems to be well aware of where I'm at. Yay!
I spent some time after I finished it up going through the different songs trying to figure out which ones I might actually be able to dance to. I'm not particularly co-ordinated or, y'know, possessed of rhythm, so songs with a strong beat where the dance steps actually fall *on* the beat are my only hope. You'd think that would be all the songs, but a surprising number of them seem to want you to step at times that seem completely unrelated to the music playing.
Sadly, a-ha's "Take on Me" is one of those latter. This strikes me as both a tragedy and a crime.
On the other hand, Fatboy Slim's "The Rockafeller Skank*" turns out to be a ridiculously fun song to dance to. (This startled me slightly, I admit.) In fact, once I tried it, I gave up trying other songs in favor of repeating this one over and over.
By the time I had danced it eight or nine times in a row, I was absolutely dripping with sweat.** But! I had SO MUCH FUN. So much!
As inventions go, I hereby declare that DDR puts sliced bread to shame. Take that, sliced bread! Your reign of terror is over.
*Check it out now, the funk soul brother!
**Don't I just get more and more charming by the moment?
