Here we go with my second Tutorial:
this time we are going from this to

1. Step: At first we need our base. Take any image you like (I took
this sexy pic of Joaquin Phoenix) and - personally I like to copy it into a
new picture 100x100 - I think this is working out better), but you can do it
your way. (Don't delete your original image we will need it again a little
later) So we now have our base:

Now you just do what you always do with your Icons: For me that means sharpen
it first then duplicating the base and setting it to Screen it's way too lighten
so I lower the Opacity to 30%:

(it doesn't really look different, does it?... anyway I always do that :P)
next I duplicate the base again and set it to soft light. Opacity: 69%

Ok... so now we have the picture as we want it to be (the part was optional... you can do your own magic with your Icons there ;) )
so let's begin with the effect I have on the Icon:
we need a new layer with this brush (from absolutetrouble.com). I mirrored it 'cause that works better for my picture:

Set it to hard light (100%)
Smudged/Brushed it where his face was covered so I have this:

(it looks a bit too lighten and strange on the right side, but I will cover this later anyway...)

To make the "too lighten" go away I duplicated the base again, set it on top to soft light (100%)

Now we need a new layer. It has to be transperancy so we can make the white
line (6px) on the right. Or you just use this brush:

(if you're too lazy... just as I usually am ;-) you don't have to credit this)

set it to lighten (100%). You should now have this:

Ok. I hope you haven't deleted your original picture yet because we now need it
again (If you deleted it then you can use your base as well.) I choose a part of his face at the left with a bit smoke:

(18x100 - you can make it smaller or bigger... just as you like it)
and copy that into your icon.

And so you have your final icon:

You can add a border, another brush or write something...
I simply added his name so I have:

Now: wasn't that easy? I hope I could help you a bit.

Feel free to ask (I can be confusing and I'm german - is that an excuse? for
me it is :D) and I'd love to see what you guys made.
