8-Bit Art

I'm a bigtime lurker over at the GAF forums and there was this one thread in particular that came up. It was about creating video game sprites out of Perlers. Perlers are these little plastic beads that you can buy online or at your local Hobby Lobby store. When reading through the topic, I had thought to myself, "Oh I have got do to this." I'll work on that today.

I've been wanting to do some Metroid stuff, but haven't had a chance yet. And Noah knows Samus kicks ass, he knows this when he watches me play all of the Metroid games. :D

That is the cutest thing I have ever seen ever. I'm going to have to try that. It looks like so much fun.

I'm putting this entry in my memories so I can know what to reference. :D

Yeah, it's so simple to do. All you have to do is just by the materials and make sure you have enough colors for whatever you want to do. That's why I emphasize on getting lots of black since the NES sprites use it a lot.

That is hardcore awesome!

Is there some kind of model you look at to put the beads on there or do you just eyeball a picture of a sprite and then have to take some guesses?

http://www.spriters-resource.com/

This has tons of extracted sprites to choose from. Pick the sprite animation you want to do and then download the sprite sheet. Next, open it up on say Photoshop or something like it, I use Paint.NET since it's free. Once opened, zoom into the selected sprite and then enable the option to show grid, and that will give you a one-to-one placement of which color bead goes where. This pretty much eliminates the guesswork.

Thanks. Sonic was a little more difficult, as you can see more and more colors are needed just for this simple 16-bit sprite.
