Mortimer Brewster (standing in the background at first) has just recently learned that his two Aunts (seated at the table) make a habit of poinsoning old men 'out of kindness.' While he was distracted in the previous scene, an older man entered the house, and the Aunts naturally seated him and began to entertain. Then Mortimer realizes what is about to happen...
