Weeee!

Our allotment seeds for the year are ordered, and will hopefully arrive before we plan to sow them on saturday. The firm sends them first class, so if they post them tomorrow that gives them three days, which should be fine, even with the questionable state of the Royal Mail these days.

On sunday Moose Biscuit continued to burn our woodpile and I got the new spud bed finished - digging all the rat-bastard bramble and nettle roots out - so hopefully on thursday evening we can get our seed spuds in the ground, and then on saturday we can sow the seeds in the big bed1

While last year our harvest consisted entirely of spuds (mains and lates) and onions, plus our wild crops of nettles and blackberries, this year we plan to growm from seed, the following: purple carrots, golden beetroots, red radishes, daikon/mooli, leeks and parsnips.

Unexpectedly, our rhubarb has returned. We bought a couple of plants last year but they completely died back, so we assumed we'd lost them, but they've come back good and strong. We may even get a small crop from them later in the year.

Also, our nettles have returned nicely and we picked lots on sunday for dinner. Very tasty and highly nutritious.

Let the veg growing begin!

1 The new bed is only about half the size of the old bed, but last year we had way too many spuds, so this year we'll only plant half as many, in the new smaller bed, and use the big bed for the rest of the veg.
