Yesterday, Soldier and I handed Tooki over to the sitter and headed to Hooters to watch the boys play on ESPN!
It was just too damn exciting to see people I know on ESPN - I was giddy! I wore my red toe polish, red bra and underware and my red Cougars sweatshirt. I took my lucky tickets (the ones Vincent Marshall signed). Side note: at the beginning of the second half I set my tickets down to eat some cake - this may have been our undoing ;)
The boys scored an early touchdown and it seemed for the first half that it was going to be a score and counter-score type game. Both teams played well. Our boys made some amazing plays - and some amazing mistakes. We had two turnovers which hurt us. Kevin, in attempt to avoid a sack kicked the ball out of bounds and we got penalyzed the yardage where the ball exited the field PLUS 15 more - so we were on a 4th and goal at the 50! We didn't make it.
The second half was frustrating. We could get/keep the ball or score. We held them to their two point lead for a long time, but then lost that BIG TIME late in the 4th. We were down by 14 the 6 minutes to go.
I downed the last of my beer and had another bite of chocolate cake and we headed home. By the time we'd gotten home Jackie Battle (sans hair)had scored a touchdown and Anthony Aldridge had followed with a two point conversion. Garrett kicked off and we recovered the ball after the return. Vinny hussled the ball back upfield. The game ended with the Cougars on their own 22nd yard line. THAT close to a tie.
It was heartbreaking to lose - but to know the boys hussled like that when everyone had given up on them made me misty eyed. They were never supposed to be in Memphis. They were never supposed to make it to the championships. The seniors started with a season where they lost all of their games. They lost 4 this entire season. They have every right to feel proud of themselves.
