03. NORMAL STORY LINE: (‘cissa’s POV)

Narcissa had still not turned to look at them. “As I was saying earlier, Lilian was a Seer. I learned quickly not to dismiss her predictions, they’ve all proved to be accurate ‘til this day.” She paused and watched the drops of water travel down the glass window.

“When Regulus arrived for his first year, Lilian had already approached me and had tried to speak to me about her vision and tried to persuade me to assist her. Naturally I ignored her.

“What good Slytherin listens to a Gryffindor? The rivalry between the houses back then was even worse than nowadays and our families only strengthened the gap of misunderstanding between us.

“Lilian was a muggle-born witch, while I came from the Ancient House of Black. There was no possible way that I could be seen talking let alone helping her. The trouble Sirius had caused by being sorted into Gryffindor was starting to escalate at home and I had no interest to be the next target of anger of my family.” Narcissa let out a bitter laugh. “But as I said before, she could be very convincing when she needed to be.

“She continued to pester me and find me when I was alone in the castle. I was getting annoyed at her, but she kept coming, asking for me to listen until I was so frustrated that I actually agree in hope that afterwards she would leave me alone.

“I believe it is needless to say what I thought of her ability.” She turned her head slightly back at them. “But there is only so long you can ignore the truth presented to you. Lilian’s accuracy to predict scared me, but at the same time you realize that as a Slytherin I find such power very attractive. Once I started to believe in the truth of her words, it was only a matter of persuasion that would convince me to assist her in whatever she asked of me.

“And so once she had recruited me by start of my fifth year she made it clear that we would need another of my family to assist us in the upcoming… mission -if you will call it that-. The easiest route we could take was to approach you, Sirius.” She turned this time completely to them.

“Me?” the dark haired man asked confused.

Narcissa nodded. “Yes. I told Lilian that since you had obviously been sorted into Gryffindor you must possess traits needed to assist us, but Lilian refused. She had seen how you treated or mistreated Severus, how you picked on the already physically abused boy. I’m not entirely sure what it was that scared her most, the fact that you showed no remorse for your actions or that you would play a vital role in fighting the Dark Lord along Severus at some point in the future.” She crossed her arms across her chest. “For some reason I did not comprehend back then, Lilian had become obsessed in protecting Severus, she would sometimes behave like a mother defending her cub. It was annoying and intriguing to me.

“It was easy for me to realize that not only would we need another of the House of Black, but that Serverus would sooner or later be recruited by Lilian. She had hinted it often enough, when we met in secret. It was merely a matter of when.

“Lilian said that my sisters were out of question, Bellatrix would go insane and Azkaban would only deepen her devotion to a mad man who would try to kill all of us in the future, besides she was already graduated by then and so contacting her would be a difficulty.” Closing her eyes she repressed the image of her Blood Sister describing what horrors her older sister would commit. “Although Andromeda became an option, Lilian’s vision showed us pretty soon that she would also be unsuitable for what needed to be done. Which left us with only Regulus, since he was the only one close enough to our age and would be easily accessible.

“Convincing Regulus was a little easier since Lilian could count on my assistant, no that I was very eager to have a kid like him involved, but he was our best chance. Besides, Lilian kept saying that Regulus would be obsessed with our Blood Master.” She leaned her back to the window barely feeling the cold through her clothing, yet she knew that soon it would reach her skin.

“That was the first time Lilian used that particular expression in front of me, and I was taken back, that someone like her, who had been raised in a Muggle environment and not even a Black, would know of it. Back then I did not ask how she knew such an expression, but later on she confessed that she had them from her visions.

“I watched Regulus once he was sorted in Slytherin very carefully, trying to determine which would be the best way to approach him. Being my cousin, I knew of the confused feelings he must have to having to live up to the expectation of his parents and not to fall into disgrace as his older brother.” She avoided looking at Sirius. “The pressure on him was very high and he thought that my continuous observations of him were part of his parents’ instruction to refrain from degrading himself and the House of Black by interacting with the wrong people.”

Narcissa paused taking a deep breath before continuing. “You may not know this, but we of the House of Slytherin are not by nature paranoid, we develop that particular trait here at Hogwarts, because, even though we stand as one against those from the outside, we are anything but close within our own den.

“From what Draco told me, things have changed little since my time, they have lessened to some degree, but the rivalry and pride of each of the member of our house are not something to be ignore.” She uncrossed one arm and held it out towards the other in the room. “Severus was an outsider amongst the outsider here at Hogwarts. He was abused by those of the other houses, abused by those that were his own housemates and abused at his own home. He was a frightened child and he displayed this by being brusque and rude to others. He was never easy to get along with, not even once we bonded, it simply wasn’t in his nature. The fact that he was a genius when it came to the use of magic, especially the Dark Arts caused him to become even more isolated from the world.

“It was Regulus who, even as a first year, realized the incredibly potential sleeping in Severus. His curiosity and his need for power made Regulus approach Severus, even if rationally thinking he was probably going to get into a lot of trouble by communicating with a half-blood.”

“What?!” Harry exclaimed. “A Half-Blood?” the younger man asked in disbelieve. “Snape?”

“Severus’ father was a muggle.” Minerva explained. “While his mother was a witch.”

Harry turned to his godfather. “You knew this?”

Sirius nodded. “I had heard of it, yes, although I must admit I never bothered confirming it.” He shrugged. “I mean, Snape is like the epitome of Slytherin. How could someone like that be anything but pure-blood. Poor and dirty, a git and a bastard, but I never believed the rumor about his heritage. It simply appeared to be much too farfetched to be the truth.”

“Nonetheless, he’s a half-blood, and Regulus was interested in him.” Narcissa stated. “My continuous observation of him unnerved him, and by the time we approached him, he was already annoyed by me.” She let a little smile appear on her face at the memory. “He was distrustful and incredibly paranoid towards me when Lilian and I approached him. Although it took us less time to convince him for our cause than Lilian’s with me, still Regulus was not easily persuaded in believe our words.

“It was during the Halloween feast, when Lily stood next to Regulus observing the festivities, that he came to see the truth of our words.

“Lilian was frightful when she had a real vision if Severus was close enough to her to amplify her powers. That night Regulus was pulled along her into the vision.” Narcissa’s expression became serious again. “Regulus was beyond scared when the vision cleared. It is one thing to be told bout the future, but to see it with your own eyes… to see your own death was something that could frighten even the most courageous person. And Regulus learned this the hard way.”
