Dear Commentators,
The women's tournament at Wimbledon is not just about the Williams sisters with a side of Shriekapova. Women's tennis is far more diverse and exciting than that.
First we had to sit through how it was so obvious Serena was going to win it that it was pointless anyone else turning up. Then we had to listen to commentary on games where you'd have thought there was only one player out there.
Now that the Williams sisters are out (hurray, hurray) do we move onto the fine players left in the draw? No, we don't. We hear about how the women's game is a sadder, more pathetic, less skillful game without the Wms sisters.
No it is not.
You want atheticism? Don't look to Serena who moves like a concrete truck in reverse. Look to Sam Stosur, or Na Li who actually work at their fitness.
You want power? There are Sabine Lisicki and Marion Bartoli whose ground strokes have (or would) blast the Williams sisters off the court.
You want a role model for women? There's Kimiko Date-Krumm, who at 40 is still competing agressively in the women's singles draw (and took Venus to a very close 3 sets).
Get over it, commentators. And I for one hope that Sabine trounces Shriekapova, so we might have some balanced commentary in the final.
