So apparently Harper is giving himself to Bush?  Oh, and they're going to have a one on one... with sexy results!  Could this writing have been worse?  Amuses me that's for sure.

Oh, I also wanted to add my 2 cents to the ( Read more... )

That's not really the point to me. The point is you shouldn't label with a big brush, and people have been doing that.

Well it's there - in talk radio, in letters to the editor, etc. Young people don't understand the sacrifices, Canada needs heroes, etc.

I don't know a single person who doesn't greatly respect the contributions of veterans.

Not to tar all of them with the same brush either, but French Canadians, as a group, generally don't tend to exhibit the same respect for the contributions of veterans or the contemporary Canadian Forces as English Canadians do.

1-what does this have to do with this case?
2-uh...you did just tar them with the same brush as those chalking up this thing to 'young idiocy.' A generalisation is a generalisation.

1. Shawn said that he didn't know anyone who didn't support Canadian veterans, and so I poointed out a very, very well-recognized group in Canada that TENDS not to support veterans as much as the rest of Canada.

2. The difference is, my assertion is well-supported, while "young idiocy" isn't. Also, by using the qualifier "generally" I indicated that I'm only talked about a trend or tendency, meaning that large numbers of French Canadians follow this trend and large numbers don't.

I was talking personally, responding to that by lumping french people together doesn't really have anything to do with that.

Just kind of pointless to single out the french here.

I didn't know you were talking about people you personally knew. I assumed you weren't given that your were discussing a particularly group of people - Canadian youth - so I responded by saying that French Canadians are a group that are very well-known to be less supportive of Canadian veterans and the armed forces in general than English Canadians.

Not exhibiting the same 'respect' and peeing on a monument out of disrespect are two very different things ( ... )

nicely put! I agree an Honour Guard would be nice, and taking those kids to visit vets or graves would be much better than criminal charges.

I dunno, I would hope this public shaming turns this into an isolated incident and we don't need to resort to policing a monument.

I've been checking the Post, the Globe, and CBC since the story broke and I haven't noticed anyone labeling all young people as nogoodnicks over this. No even knew until today that two out of three were under 18 and, therefore, the media assumed they weren't youths at all. If the media had known, they wouldn't have been able to publish the photos. The tone of the reporting I've seen has been very specific about this being all about these three particular individuals, not young people in general, and asking for the public's help to track them down.

I have to say i agree. I have seen most of the focus been on these individuals and on how to stop it from happening again.
