Garden checklist:
-- tomatoes, basil, hot peppers, squash all in and settled
-- bush beans up (and once again under beetle attack)
-- peas, lettuce, green onions doing much better, thank you, since the sprinkler system got fixed
-- harvesting final asparagus spears (10 meals worth this year...WOOT)
-- strawberries fattening up but still green
-- lots of teeny tiny Italian plums on the tree
-- garlic is coming in to flower (yummy for soups and salads)
-- one corner of one bed is dedicated to the volunteers which this year includes potatoes, tomatillos, squash, dill dill and more dill, cilantro, a tomato and a sunflower. (One of these year's I'm going to leave the whole thing to volunteers since they always grow best and it's always a surprise what comes up.)
-- various flower beds, baskets and planters too, but my passion is all about growing FOOD.
A dream of mine is to be entirely self-sufficient veg and fruit-wise. So far I'm only able to grow enough garlic for a full year; freeze about four months worth of tomatoes, beans, plums and snap peas; dry some herbs and make pesto which I eke out over the winter; and grow Asian stir fry greens (under a plastic row cover) through most of the winter. Not too shabby I guess.
We had to do a redesign on part of our house (neighbour's selling, property line issues...major headache) and in the newly exposed area I'm thinking of growing kiwi fruit and figs -- yes, we have the right climate for them! They'd be nice for the larder, eh?
