The best way to start a week...

I went to take out the garbage this morning for two important reasons.  The first is because it was garbage day and the second is because the garbage man wont do it himself.

What a beautiful day, I thought, as I merrily skipped to the side of the house where we keep the garbage cans (the skipping part embarrasses my kids; that's why I do it).  The sun was shining, the sky was blue--birds were singing.  I took the first can down to the road and returned to take the second.  As I pulled it roughly towards the driveway,  I heard a strange, unfamiliar sound.  There was an inexplicable hissing coming from the garbage can.  I couldn’t figure out what it was because there shouldn’t have been anything aerosol in there.

Then I look down and see something like a large brown leaf by the wheel.

A BAT!!!

I had wheeled over it a bit and it was still hissing.  I did the chicken dance halfway down the driveway before I pulled myself together and ran inside and called my neighbor to see if her husband was still home, and if it wasn't too much trouble, could he come save me?

He came over and after a bit of banging of garbage cans and scuffling, he finished it off and put it in the garbage for me (??) while I cowered in the house, safe behind my screen door, making high-pitched squealing noises of my own (okay, there was no banging and no scuffling but the squealing part was true).  I called animal control who said that was sufficient and that they didn’t need to come check it out, even though I was sure it may have been a vampire bat and the hissing sound may have been it burning in the sunlight…

I’m so glad I didn’t have the kids take the garbages out today!  That could have been really bad-scarred forever.

I don’t know if I will be able to take out the garbages for a while, either.  Just so you know…
