Maryah got her 20k check up even though she's only at 19,345. I was looking at my checkup coupon and noticed there was a free oil change (which I was due for) so I decided to take advantage of it. Also I got a 50% discount on a premium interior detailing (shampooing, scrubbing, decrudding and all STICKER REMOVAL, among other things.) I was so sad about my Stereolab sticker being destroyed by the winter. Anyway, I made a decision not to eat in my car anyomore because even though I wash it every other week and vacuum there are still places I just can't get to. I smoke in my car but I don't ash in the ashtray and I'm told my car doesn't really reek of smoke. I also air it out whenever i'm not in it, craacking the windows and such. Maryah looks so freaking good! She's as clean as the day I got her. Her birhtday is in a couple of days. She came off the factory line on the 18th.
At the dealership I got an invitation to the Scion Club Picnic. I shit you not! Free food! Hell yeah. Even Prius owners don't have that!
There is a fellow Maryan owner in my hood. We were coming towards each other and we slowed. We did that annoying talk in the middle of the intersection thing. Then we pulled over and he showed me how to get better sound from my stereo. There are three settings: Neutral, Hear and Feel. Apparently, with each one you gotta fool around with bass, treble and balance. I was impressed.
Little Floater 1989-1992.
She was my first car! An '89 Acura Integra LS. She was owned by a neighbor, the proverbial little old lady who never drove it anywhere. She kept it meticuliously clean and always in the garage! Then one day I noticed she'd but a FOR SALE sign on it. I went over to her house and inquired. She told me the price and I went home and told my mom. She was looking for another car so that I could be more useful carting around my sister and niece and all that crap. My mom and I went back to look at the car and then she went to the credit union and got a loan. Then we all went to the dealership so the car could be examined and such. It was the seller's idea. It was a pretty aweoms experience. We got to keep the warrenty and later that evening, During my senior year of high school I worked at the VA hospital in the file room (like Harvey Pekar) until every cent was paid to my mom.I was making 5.75USD an hour which was big money back in '89, expecially when the mall jobs I really wanted only paid 4.00 an hour! I had little floater! Her name comes from a NRBQ song, and I had her for about six weeks before she got her name. The song is about a car, so I guess I thought it fit. She was grandma gold and fabulous. Sadly, Little Flo was destroyed in my bad car accident, but she saved my life.
Blanca 1992-???
She was, as her name suggests, a white '89 Mazda MX-6. My cousin Tammy was moving overseas to teach and gave her to me. She was stick and I loved her. We had so many road trips and adventures. I had her for about six years until I moved to Big Bear and gave her to another cousin. I have no idea what happened to Blanca (nobody ever called her that except me. they called her Little Floater II)
The Jellybean 1993-2007
She was a red Madza MX-3. Stick shift and cute. When I moved to NC the government gave my mom some big ugly company car, so I drove the jellybean. She was a great car. my mom had gotten the jellybean in 1993 because she thought my sister was going to drive it while going to college. Anya decided to go out of state for college and my mom just kept the car. i took some road trips in her. She's the family car. All of us have had her at one time or another. My brother borrowed the jellybean in late 1999 (when I got the grocerygetter) and then jellybean came home and my mom drove her every so often until about 2003 when she gave the jellybean to my sister. We drove it down to Orlando, where it practically died! But we were able to fix it. It wasn't neglect, just old. My brother had taken such good care of her! Jellybean had gone from California to Atlanta to NC to VA to CT back to VA and to Florida before finally going back ot Cali when my sister moved there and dying peacefully two months ago. she had 200k on her when she passed.
The Grocerygetter 1994-2004
She was a 1994 Ford Escort wagon, silver. Beloved! She was the only five speed my mom and I could find and we found her by accident when the Jellybean was getting a check up at the Madza dealership. She'd just been traded in. The dealer said nobody wanted her because she was five speed. She had low miles and we got her for 1500 bucks! she was only 5 years old. She had no mechnical drama other than the clutch going out in 2002. She survived one car accident and continued on taking back and forth between college and home before dying on the 89 freeway in late 05. Ironically enough, the grocery getter never carted a single bag of groceries during our time together, but she hauled all my possession from VA to VT, which was pretty amazing.
Evelyn 1993-2005
That fucking car! She was a 1993 Honda Accord I got at the same shop that pronounced the grocerygetter dead. She was cheap, though ended up costing me quite a bit of cash to keep her on the road. I finally paid off all my Evelyn related debt earlier this year. She had been modified by her previous owner and while they had taken pretty decent car of the interior and body, the innerworking were in shambles. She stalled out for no reason, (she was automatic) and had a host of other issues. Her last great trip was to my undergraduate graduation. The only time she ever left the state of Vermont was when I drove to Albany to pick my mother up from the airport. We laughed so hard about what a piece of shit Evelyn was, but she made back to Burlington. After graduation I got Maryah. My parents, grandmother, sisters and brother went in on the graduation present. It was over whelming. Leaving me with not much of car payment. It was so nice. A year to the DATE I got Evelyn I donated her to Good News Garage and gave my parentes the tax right off. Seven weeks later I got a letter from the person who had received my fixed up perfectly old car. She thanked me. I have seen Evelyn around town! Once at Barnes and Noble. She had a carseat in the back and I noticed the tale tell ding in the left front panel.
Maryah 2005-present
Maryah is a 2006 Scion Xa. After my graduation, I went back home and back to work. (My graduation was August 28, 2005, the day before Katrina if I'm not mistaken) My dad had gone to New Orleans with some other doctors to see if any help they could provide. The thursday before labor day my mom called and said, "Hey can you come down to VA like tomorrow?" I boarded the greyhound that night and got to VA the following evening. I had no idea what was going on. In the morning my dad came home and we went to IHOP. Nothing really special about that. We always do that. Then my mom was like, "Okay, we have a surprise for you!" I was hoping they were going to let me take Alexis (chocolate lab) back to VT with me! But we went to the dealership and my was like, "Okay Happy graduation!" And the dealer was smiling and I was like, "What?" and then another guy pulled around the front with Maryah. I started crying. Prior to that I'd been struggling to move, graduate from college and had was trying to work more hours to pay the 4k required to fully restore Evelyn. Maryah's good on gas, she's fun to drive and I just adore her. I don't really drive her all that much, usually the most I'll drive her is when I'm going to VA. I fill her up about once a month or so, which is so crazy! I filled her up today and I was like, "Whoa the last time I did this was the night before my parents showed up last month." Granted, it's not like vermont is bursting with places to do. And since it's summer I tend to walk around a lot more.
this is an actual picture of Maryah parked in front of my house. I think she's gonna be the "new" jellybean.
the only known picture of both the grocery getter and the jellybean.
