Character death information and application

Please thoroughly read everything before filling out the application form.

× Can my character die?

Plots have plotted, events have eventuated, and it looks like someone's going to die. Well, that's alright, it happens. But BEFORE it can happen, though, the mods need to know about it and approve it. No exceptions. Which is why we have this handy-dandy death application form! If you're interested in killing off your character for a bit, please thoroughly read everything in this post, reply to it with the filled out form, and we'll respond as quickly as we can to let you know whether or not you're clear to go ahead with the character death.

The purpose of this is to regulate the amount of death-and-revival that happens in the game. If it happens too frequently, it becomes old hat, and loses its impact on the rest of the game. Please keep this in mind if we decline your application and ask you to come up with an alternative to killing your character.

Moderator Guidelines:
What we're looking for in a death application

× In this application, we are requesting detailed, viable reasons as to why you want character to die. "For the lols", "because I'm bored", "it would make So-and-so aaaaangst" are examples of BAD reasons, and will be immediately rejected. If you want to do something for the lols or because you're bored or want someone to angst, there is plenty that you can do with your LIVING character that would just as easily fill those requirements.

× Character death is more likely to be approved if it's part of a bigger plot. For instance, as part of the October-November 2010 Rosalia plot, or a murder that's a result of months of tension and build-up. If the death itself is the end-all-be-all of the entire plot, though, it will be denied.

× Exceptions to this are, for instance, if a character was already dying in canon. Those deaths in-game still need to be cleared by the mods, though, so keep reading!

× When a character dies during a plot, we might ask the player to keep their character dead for the duration of the plot, unless there's a good reason not to. For instance, if it's a plot that's going to continue for months. A dead character will be considered on hiatus, and posting requirements do not have to be met if they stay dead for several weeks, but this will have to be cleared beforehand.

× Near death experiences are allowed, and do not need mod approval. For instance, if a character nearly drowns, and has to awkwardly be given mouth to mouth by their best friend and life-long love interest, that's fine! The same goes for characters that can't die for whatever reason - immortals, homunculi, etc.

× Lastly, if you kill your character without filling out the application or without mod approval, we will suspend you from the game for a period of time that we'll determine on a case-by-case basis. Should this be ignored, you will be removed from the game.

Reviving the Dead:
Bringing you back to life as painfully as possible!

Important: If your character is part of a murder plot (either as the murderer or as the victim), please also carefully read this post as well.

Once a character has joined the ranks of the non-living, that character must sit out of the game for a minimum of ten (10) days. That means no network posts, no logs, and no tagging (though back-tagging ongoing threads from pre-death is fine). They're dead, but they're not zombies. Yet, anyway.

On the S.S. Thor, it takes a lot of paperwork and manpower to bring a deceased individual back to life. Some variation of one of the following will happen to your character, though what exactly it is depends on on the situation, mod discretion, and your own ideas for revival plots. We can take it as far as you want beyond the minimum penalty - how far, we'll leave up to you.

→Lost paperwork: Hey, it happens in even the best of bureaucracies! Unfortunately, that nice condo your character was schmaltzing it up in has been repossessed, and your character and all of their worldly possessions have been crammed back into a room in the Stowaways. To add insult to injury, their wage has been cut!

But what if, you say, my character is already earning minimum wage and living in the Stowaways? There's (lost) paperwork for that, too! Unfortunate but true, calling in dead to work for 10 days in a row does little to impress any employer, so a Minimum-wage earning character will be ineligible for a wage increase at the beginning of the following month. This also means they won't be able to upgrade to a new room on the Deckswabber level either, so if they've been making plans to move, those will just have to be put on hold until they can manage to stay alive long enough to work an entire month.

This is not negotiable - it is an automatic consequence for character death, and something to both expect and plan for when carrying out a character death plot.

→Experimental drugs Whether your character's body was intact or maimed beyond apparent repair, the leading scientists of the S.S. Thor have an amazing variety of equally amazing drugs with which to assist in the restoration of life! Unfortunately, while these miracle drugs do, indeed, perform miracles, they also have some unfortunate side-effects which, while not permanent, can last up to two weeks after a character's revival.

Side-effects of the revival drugs will likely include suppression or elimination of powers and abilities, or - for those without such fancy talents - loss of a few key memories, quite a lot of memories, or even all memories, partial or complete loss of one or more senses, loss of sense or inhibition, things of that nature.

Basically what this comes down to is: Upon revival, a character will be suffering from two side-effects. One physical, one mental. This is one of the reasons the mods need to be aware that your character is going to be dying - because we will be creating a custom list of potential side-effects for each individual character. We're open to suggestions players might have for their character in this area, but please keep in mind that our intent is for these effects to have a meaningful and significant effect on the character in question.

The Application:
For the dying.

Name: Your name/internet handle.
Victim's name and username: Your character's name and their journal name.
Murderer's name and username: (If applicable)
Please explain why you want to kill off your character: We'd like thoughtful, well-explained reasons. One sentence probably won't cut it.
If approved, how will it happen? Pretty self-explanatory - are they being murdered? Is it going to be broadcast on the Guide? Details are appreciated and encouraged.
If approved, when do you want it to happen? In case we might be working around other character plots.
Other characters involved: Any other characters that might potentially become involved, either directly or indirectly; family members, friends, coworkers. Pretty much anyone your character has enough CR with who will be affected by this death.
Plot outline: Please give us an outline of the overall plot - what's going to happen, who will be directly involved, and so forth.
How does this death fit in with the greater plot? Is it necessary for the plot's success? Are there alternatives to death that might be considered and used instead? Use this opportunity to convince us that death is the only reasonable, logical result of whatever is going to lead up to it.
