Andrew Wyeth died today. Age 91, an american painter. My first favorite and so a memorable occasion. His paintings are so dreary and dead on the surface, but so full of life under that layer. The first Andrew Wyeth painting I ever laid eyes on was one in an encyclopedia of a boy looking out from a doorway. There was something about it, even at a young age, that I always liked. Later in my art appreciation class at 17, I discovered more of his work and the stories behind them. His painting "Pentecost" is one of my favorites. It's so simple on the outside, fishing nets blowing in the wind, but like the boy in the doorway painting, "Pentecost" has this mystery attached to it that makes it come alive.
Although most of his work is on the east coast, I was able to see a traveling show containing mostly "the Helga pictures". Well, maybe his death will spark an even bigger success for his work...
In other news I am getting old. BFA is done. Double dozen birthday is done. Looking for grown up jobs...not even close to being done. Website for art, almost done. And now if only the questions about a husband would be done.
