Review - Black & White from Secret Recipe

So, after a year in Jakarta, I've decided to resign from my position as solo designer at the  company I currently work for. There's no problem really, with the company itself, but I figured I had to develop myself a bit further if I really want to be an established designer by the time I'm 30. Anyways, as part of enjoying the trickling last days in the capitol city, my sister and I went on a culinary spree at PI.

And of course, I picked up some cake.

Actually, I had my eye on this shop since the evening before--I spied on the Pejaten Village branch of Secret Recipe for a while, but wasn't really drawn to it until my sister pointed it out to me. So when I saw the shop in PI, I vowed to buy at least one piece of something from the shop. I really wanted the tiramisu, since we had just finished dinner and I was craving for some light dessert, but they didn't have tiramisu in slices. Yeah, like, uh-huh, I'd buy a whole cake of tiramisu for myself. In my dreams, yeah. It was somewhat a disappointment; tiramisu is a staple for cakeries and not providing it in slices is really not profitable. On the bright side, none of the cakes contained alcohol. (Which, I don't know whether to put that as a plus--I can eat everything they serve!--or a minus--they don't stick to the original recipe. I'll just stick with the positive mind.)

So, instead of tiramisu, I decided to buy Black & White, which apprently is a bestseller cake of Secret Recipe. The cake is multi-layered, with thick slabs of cream in between. The cake itself is chocolate, and rather sponge-y. I'd prefer it a bit more moist and solid to match the cream, but it blended well enough as it was. The cream, on the other hand, was awesome. The yellow cream is actually made out of white chocolate with the flavour of vla, while the chocolate cream is made out of milk chocolate. The texture of the cream is light and fluffy--a neat combination of vla and cream. The winner, though, was the thin layer of dark chocolate that engulfed the whole exterior of the cake. The very subtle bitterness of the dark chocolate tamed down the thickness of the cream, blending the flavour into a very surprisingly nice treat. For a nice price, too: only Rp 20.000 per slice!
