home again, home again, jiggety-jig

So glad to be home. This holiday was paced brutally: a day of travel, a day with family, then back to traveling, and so forth for another round. While I don't regret the trouble or the expense, I do hope next year will be more peaceful! Brother-in-law's wedding was, on the whole, lovely, in the way that spending far too much money on a wedding will ensure, and I wore high heels for half the day before finally switching to my beloved Danskos. Which were wholly inappropriate to my dress and to the occasion. But I doubt anyone could see them anyway.

While we were with my mother's family, my grandmother, who is a voracious reader of many genres (mystery, romance, fantasy, sci-fi), insisted on enabling me to a series I'm almost embarrassed to like: Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars. The one-to-one correspondences between real-world historical cultures/empires and Elliott's fantasy I find irritating (to me it's lazy worldbuilding), and one of the protagonists (Liath) I want to consign to an island prison for Sues,* but I'm finding the books addictive nonetheless. I simply skim past the parts that bore me or irritate me, and read about the characters I do like.

* also inhabited by Daenerys Targaryen and Rand al'Thor
