Chapter Five

"There's another one, Jack," Tosh shouted. He finished pulling his coat on as he ran down the stairs toward her.

"That's five, in completely different parts of the city, within the last ten minutes," he said.

"What the hell is going on?" Owen said, also peering over Tosh's shoulder at the monitor.

"I don't know but we'll have to split up," Jack said, "Tosh, you're here; Ianto, with Owen; Illyana, you're with me."

"This is a trap," Illyana whispered to Ianto as they pulled on their own coats and followed Jack and Owen. "You know that, right?"

Ianto nodded. There was no way these spikes were a coincidence. They had spent the morning explaining what was going on to Jack, and now Rift spikes all over Cardiff with no sign of anything coming through. They were definitely walking into a trap. Someone was trying to get them out of the Hub and separated.

"Should we tell Jack?"

"He knows," Ianto sighed. "He won't admit it but he knows it's a trap. That's why you're with him."

"They aren't going to go after me," Illyana said. If they were moving on her before the three days were up they knew Torchwood and Jack were hiding her, and that meant Jack would keep her close and a direct attack wasn't possible.

"What do you-?"

"Let's go, Ianto!" Owen shouted at him before he could finish his sentence and Jack pulled up in the SUV.

"Be careful," Illyana told Ianto as she slid in next to Jack.

Illyana followed Jack's instructions and kept her gun out. She was sure that it wasn't going to make a difference, though. Ianto and Owen were in more danger. Quinn wouldn't try to grab her while she was with Jack. It'd be too risky; Jack was good at what he did, and Quinn knew it.

That didn't mean he wouldn't take hostages to get what he wanted, though. He knew Jack couldn't follow him once he had her so…

"Jack, Ianto and Owen's comms are down!" Tosh's voice sounded panicked through the earpiece. "I can't get a response from either of them."

"Try to get a signal on where they are," Jack said, already running toward the SUV, Illyana close behind.

"What do you think you're going to accomplish by taking us?" Owen asked.

Ianto sighed, Owen was annoying them and that wasn't going to help the situation at all. Although he, too, was interested in the answer. Taking them would accomplish nothing other than possibly bringing the full force of Jack's temper down on them.

"We don't want to hurt you," Quinn responded. "When we get Illyana, we'll let you go."

"And we're supposed to trust you to not just kill us when she gets here?" Owen asked.

"Shut up, Owen," Ianto sighed. "Don't antagonize the kidnappers, please."

"He has a point," Carter said, looking up from his book. "If we let them go they could come after us."

"Into the future?" Quinn and Ianto both said at the same time.

"Unless I've missed something," Ianto said, "And I assure you I haven't. We don't have the ability to follow you to the 51st century."

"Jack, just let me go to them," Illyana argued. "It's the easiest way. They shouldn't have to die to protect me. No one should."

"They aren't going to die," Jack said, pulling more guns from the cupboard and handing one to Illyana. "We're getting them back and keeping you safe."

"It won't work," she insisted. "It's only going to put you in danger again."

"No one is-"Jack stopped and turned to face her again as her words sunk in. "Again?"

"I mean, it's just…"

"Did I know you before?"

"Jack, I've got a location!" Tosh shouted.

"We're going to have a talk later," Jack said, already heading across the room to see what Toshiko found. "Let's go."

*****

"He's found them, Sir. Illyana is with him."

"Is he giving her up?"

"We still don't have audio."

"We need to take care of this now."

"I've already sent agents in."

Jack and Illyana stood in the centre of the small room, guns pointed at them. Ianto sighed. He had hoped Jack would find a way that didn't involve storming in to save them. Obviously he hadn't, and Ianto doubted he'd even tried to come up with a better way. He'd also brought Illyana with him. This wasn't going to go well at all.

"If you just let us take her home with us, we'll release your friends."

"I can't do that," Jack said. "She doesn't want to go."

"My boss wants her back."

"She's not property," Jack insisted. "It's her choice. She wants to stay here."

Illyana eyes widened when she saw Carter move to point a gun at Ianto's head. She couldn’t let this happen. She should've grabbed her vortex manipulator before she left. She could've at least tried to get help here.

"I really wouldn’t do that," Jack said calmly, although Illyana could feel the tension radiating from him.

"Jack, I'll go with them," Illyana said, trying to step away from him, only to feel his grip on her arm tighten, holding her in place. "Just let me go. It's not worth it."

Illyana sighed as she heard Jack, Ianto, Owen, and even Tosh through the open comm tell her that wasn't an option.

"She wants to go. Just let us have her and its over," Quinn said. "We don't want to hurt your friends."

Jack frowned as he saw both Ianto and Owen's eyes widen and their bodies visibly tense. Both were staring at something behind him, but he couldn’t turn to look. Not without alerting Quinn and Carter who didn't appear to have seen anything yet.

"You may have kept her from us before but-"

"I'm really getting the feeling I wasn't told everything about this whole situation," Jack said. "Second comment today that implies I was involved in all of this before."

Jack closed his eyes as flashes of memory started to go through his mind. He had known her before. He had been involved in this. It was all starting to come together now. He raised his arm and began pressing buttons on his wrist strap. He felt Illyana tense and looked up to see both Quinn and Carter tighten the grips on their guns. He also saw the signatures of two agents in the next room. It appeared back up had arrived, however distasteful that back up may be. They weren't here to kill him or the others.

Ianto watched as Jack bit back a smile and leaned down to whisper in Illyana's ear. He had no idea what was going on but something had happened. Ianto was almost positive Jack's memories had returned, but he wasn't sure what Jack had done with his vortex manipulator. Whatever it was had made Jack very pleased.

Before his thoughts could explore the possibilities any further, Jack pushed Illyana away from him and rushed forward, pushing both Ianto and Owen's chairs over, knocking them both to the ground as two men ran into the room, firing what Ianto assumed were guns of some kind. Carter pushed a button on his wrist and disappeared, and Ianto watched in horror as Quinn ran toward Illyana who was just getting back to her feet. He couldn't believe they had gone through all of this just to let him take her now. One of the new men beat him to her, grabbing her arm they disappeared as well. Jack got to his feet and ran toward Quinn, as he also vanished in a flash of light.

Jack turned to face the last of the men. "What took you so long?"

"We hoped intervention wouldn't be necessary, that they wouldn't find her here," he said. "We were wrong."

"Why did you hide her here?"

"They were getting close," the man admitted. "We needed to put her somewhere away from the agency's reach so they wouldn't think to look. We didn't expect them to find you."

"I hate to interrupt," Ianto cut in, "but who are you? Where is Illyana? And what's going to happen to her?"

"He's a Time Agent," Jack answered as he bent down to quickly untie both Ianto and Owen. "He took her back to the Agency. The last part I don't know the answer to."

"We'll find someplace else to hide her now," the Agent answered. Then he turned his attention to Jack. "You know I can't leave you all like this, right? The Agency doesn't exist yet."

Owen sighed. "We can't afford to lose the last two years. It would put Earth in incredible danger. Jack, you can't let them retcon us."

"It's not the same as our retcon," Jack said, "And I can't stop them. Just because they came here to save us doesn't mean they won't kill us if they see us as a threat."

"Owen is right; wiping our memories would endanger everything we've been protecting."

"Our retcon can be very selective. We'll just remove what is necessary," the agent explained. "Is there somewhere safe that we can-?"

"The Hub," Ianto offered. "We can lock it down and we'll be safe until we wake up. Toshiko will be there as well."
