Next on the walkthrough agenda is a tour of the neighborhood and some other things on how to get a Sim's life started. This is a pretty short update, but I hope it still satisfies you simmers.
The way The Sims 3 sets up the neighborhood is much different than in The Sims 2. You ultimately start a new game for every family you make. This sounds really tedious but in reality it's not. You can still change households within a game, but your previous household goes on living and may make decisions you don't want them to make!
When placing a family, you have a few options on what you can do.
You can buy a house, either unfurnished or furnished.
Or you can buy a lot. I bought Jen a lot so that I could show the new build/buy mode features.
Once you buy your lot or house, you're ready to zoom in and play!
When you view the neighborhood in Map Mode, all the icons show up telling you what each place is. They determine between community lots (the benches), occupied houses (houses colored in white), unoccupied houses (houses not colored in), and empty lots, (empty rectangles).
Our tour guide is Ms. Agnes Crumplebottom! She's young in this game, and she's a loner.
All together now...awwwwww.
City Hall sits proudly in the center of town. If you want to get a job in the political career, take a charisma class, or even join a protest, City Hall is the place to be.
Central Park is always a place for gathering. Sims from all over the neighborhood hang out here. It's the best place to make new friends.
Next to City Hall is the school. Yes! You can follow your kids to school now! Just like work though, you can't see inside. But now we know that our Sims' kids aren't just hoping on a bus to nowhere.
Across the street from the school is the community pool. It's a great place to make a splash.
Across the street from the pool is the bookstore. It's a bookworm's haven. Here you can shop and even get a part time job.
Next door to the bookstore is the theater. This is where the music lovers work. You can attend plays and concerts here as well, and take classes in music.
Next door to the theater is the grocery store. Teens can also get a part time job here.
Across the street from the grocery store is the Bistro. Culinary career hopefuls gather here to learn the ways of fine dining. This is also a place to take cooking classes, or just to order some drinks or eat outside with friends.
Across the street from the Bistro is the Library. You can follow your sim inside the quiet halls to meet bookworms or just to read a nice book.
Next door to the Library is the Police Station. You can get a job here in the law enforcement career or you can take classes.
Behind City Hall is a nice section of suburbia.
Also there is three more career buildings. The tall beige building in the front is where you go to get a job in the Journalism career, or take writing classes. Behind it is the warehouse where the Criminal career is based. And up on the hill is the Science facility where sims can take classes and get jobs in the Science career.
Nearby is the Art Gallery and the Hospital. The Art Gallery is a community lot where you can go inside to view...well, art. And the hospital is where hopeful doctors work. Now you can give birth at a hospital instead of magically in your home!
Behind the hospital is a diner where culinary jobs are also offered, along with cheaper food than the Bistro. Across the street is the Day Spa where sims can do some rejuvinating.
The beach is a great place to unwind and meet new friends. A sim I'm playing is planning to have his wedding here. :)
Up the hill overlooking the ocean is where all the super rich people live. The pink house in the bottom left corner belongs to the Altos, and the other house belongs to the Landgraabs.
Across town is the Stadium where the athletic sims take haven. You can also attend concerts and games here.
Finally, nestled in the depths of the hills is the Goth home and the cemetary. The cemetary is a spooky place, and part time jobs are offered there for brave teens.
In the options menu I discovered that you can change the life span of all your sims.
Also for the legacy lovers, you can disable the neighborhood story progression.

Well I hope you enjoyed my neighborhood tour. I hope it was informative! The next update will be the build and buy modes. :)
Happy Simming!
