THIS IS THE SADDEST THING I WILL EVER WRITE, I PROMISE. because ughhh, when you go into the implications of it? like, yellow-eyes was taking care of it anyway, so john sold his soul for no reason, and if dean hadn't unbound them he and Sam would have just died together in the season 2 finale and we all know that would have been fine with Dean and no one would have had to go to hell and gaaah WHY DO I DO THESE THINGS

what happens is pretty much canon, though. if dean hadn't unbonded them, azazel would have saved him and sammy anyway, and they would have died together in the season 2 finale. no one would have gone to hell. would have been a pretty sweet ending for them, all things considered.
